Remember all scouts, parents, and leaders of the troop are invited to any Eagle ceremony by this troop. 2. OA Fall Fellowship-was held at the FHA camp at Mogart's Beach. We had 5 boys attend and they were very involved and we have every reason to be proud. Two of our boys were in the rededication ceremony at the last minute and did a very credible job. Four of the 5 were involved in the "iron duck" event and won for our chapter. Three of the 5 spoke at the church service. Justin T. led the entertainment. Tom L. also stated they had access to Aberdeen Farm, which is a beautiful property. UPCOMING EVENT INFORMATION- 1. November 1 is the deadline for the Merit Badge University. Applications need to get into the scout store in Newport News. 2. Canoe trip for this upcoming weekend has been canceled. Will try again in the spring. 3. Next Monday night is a regular meeting, despite school lets out early. 4. Fall Camporee-Nov. 8-10-is at Aberdeen Farm out in the Mogart's Beach area. It is 10 minutes from town. We will meet as usual at Trinity and leave from there. Port-a-lets will be present. Water will be trucked in. We are running the backpacking "booth". 5. November 11 is Court of Honor. It will be dinner at the American Legion. Everyone is to bring a dish. The American Legion will supply the chicken. Note the time6:30 PM. Scouts, these means Class A and don't forget your dues. Please wear ceremonial Class A's, this means sashes. 6. The Klondike Derby will be hosted by Troop 7. And it will be held at Nike Park. SUMMER CAMP NEWS- After deciding to take the whole troop to Blue Ridge next summer July 6-12, Tom L. contacted the camp and found that they had been filled up since August 1. Tom L. and Brian L. are looking at other camps where we will take the whole troop this year. They are going to pick a camp based on having talked to someone who has been to the camp not just that its available. They will also try to get the same date July 6-12, but at a last resort will take any week. (Camps you attend in the summer require a $100 deposit for a reservation. Our troop may just have to risk the money in the future to ensure a place at a camp we like. Also, there seems to be a "Grandfather clause" at some of the camps, so this may also have to enter into our choices in the future.) HOUSEKEEPING- 1. The shed has been totally cleaned. Looks great. BAD NEWS-We have only 7 mess kits and 10 tents. This means there are 12 tents missing since last year at Camporee time. Please check your house, scouts and parents. This is a costly replacement problem. (A discussion followed that this can't continue. Our scouts are supposed to be developing responsibility. And for this troop, the time may be coming when a sign out sheet for tents will have to be controlled by an adult; and if the scout does not bring back the tent, they will be asked to financially replace it. Our scouts are supposed to be developing responsibility.) 2. Liz M. asked about sending Thank you notes to various organizations that donate money throughout the year, not just spaghetti supper. It appears there is no formal route for this, the Quinn's take care of the Possum Hollow, Barbara G. has taken care of the spaghetti notes, etc. Tom L. mentioned that we had received money from the American Legion 2 weeks ago. PLEASE LET LIZ M. KNOW IF DONATIONS ARE RECEIVED, so we can send a Thank you. 3. As Barbara G. was unable to make the meeting, the by-law printout will be tabled to next parents meeting. THINGS TO CHECK INTO- 1. Jon G. brought to our attention the possibility of doing the astronomy &/or space exploration merit badges at the Living Museum to out attention. He appears to be working with that group. There are group rates, or singularly at $27 per scout. It would be an overnighter from 6:30 pm Saturday to 9:30 am on Sunday. More information will need to be gathered by Jon G. Could we have a volunteer to work with John G. on this? 2. Jean B. states that she has 3 flags ready for retirement whenever we would like to schedule a ceremony. Buddy K. also stated he had 2. STATE OF THE TROOP- 1. John H states we have 16 counselors for merit badges. Liz M. has been asked to send out a list. 2. We have 33 scouts. 9-Life; 5-Star; 5-1st Class; 3-2nd class; 6-tenderfoot; 4-scout; & 1 at no rank. 3. We have 24 adults with the troop, 5 of which are our former scouts. |
