| Leader's Meeting Minutes Monday March 18 Leaders present: Brian, John, Marsha, Jean, Myrle, Barbara, Frank, Tom, Chris, Liz Opening Comments: a. Ed H. made a proposal to go to the Yorktown Coast Guard Training Station. He had attended an OA event there and had a good time. Classes were held in the amphitheater, sports in the gym were available, and it was cheap $.50/night/person. They could eat in the mess hall for a little more. Also, has a campground. Ed commented that Fort Boykins used to be fun, but now its all work. Brian rebutted that when the boys stopped planning, then adults planned which made it more of a working weekend. Ed & Nick L. said they were willing to plan it, & therefore it will be brought to greenbar and maybe there it will be put on the calendar between April 1 & Oct 30. 1. Patrol Reorganization- Brian said he had heard only positive comments. With regards to the new boys, they will stay together for maybe 6 months. Jeff H. & John B. are designated as their instructors. New Business: 1. Mentors- Brian's idea is that a mentor is a "go-between". Help keep track of needs for awards, encourage the boys to make plans, & assist the patrol leader in deciding where to go for information. It may be another adult for knots or first aid or whatever. A list was passed around asking for volunteers to mentor. 2. Scout Sunday should it be one of the required events? Not addressed. Leader Assignment for Trips: 1. Nags Head April 4-6 -- Brian L. 2. Scout Show April 12-14 -- Scott H. Brian has asked the boys to talk about it so jobs can be divided among the patrols. 3. Summer Camp Blue Ridge --- Tom L. 4. Summer Camp Chickahominy --- Neil C. is handling the money & Marsha D. to coordinate merit badge requests. Marie has the troop medical forms. Nothing further discussed in the meeting, but after, Tom brought up that unlike Chick-which lets 1 leader per 4 boys go free to camp- that Blue Ridge does not. He asked that the Troop consider how to defray costs for this years exploratory trip & how we would finance leaders if the whole troop goes next year. There is a base camp fee of $120 plus extra for the high adventure. It was decided to bring it up at the parents meeting where several options will be presented and let the parents decide on how to assist the leaders for this year. Fund raisers and various other ways to raise money would be considered for next. ______________________ Old Business: 1. Assignments for Roundtable- March-- April-- May-- June-- 2. Research Committee for trips-Chris B. report a. The Naval Academy weekend already has over 500 troops that have applied. We will need to get a commitment by the fall of this year to apply for January 2004. Does the Troop want to commit to pursuing? b. I understand that the Capital has reopened for tours. I had scheduled an afternoon tour for a Friday at the end of June (I believe it was the 28th). They don't confirm the tours until three weeks prior to the scheduled time. If any are interested and it doesn't conflict with any scheduled Troop events we may want to pursue this as a weekend event. c. I would like to discuss the C&O Canal Tow Path bike hike (ie potential dates for sign up dead line and trip). 3. Reward/Demerit system---Scott H. report 4. Going and Coming at Events- what constitutes as being "AT" the camp out 5. How are we going to sign off partial merit badge cards? |
