Leader's Meeting Minutes
Monday Jan 21

Attendees:
Brian, Scott, Barb, Liz, Frank, Marcia, Buddy, Marie, Myrle, John, Chris, Tom

Opening Comments:
1.  Discussion & Vote on changing the Leader's meeting.  Discussion to move the meeting to 6, or another night, or continue into the scout meeting.  It was decided that the meeting would be at 6:30 and continue through the boys meeting, but would send a representative down to make sure things were running smoothly.
2.  OA Elections-looking for scouts for OA who have the following credentials-a "high class" type of scout, one who attends meetings regularly, Life rank.  We choose 3 a year.  Its basically an Honor society for Boy Scouts.  It involves 4 camping trips & 2 conclaves per year.  More dues.  Since its life scouts, its mostly older boys who camp without parents.  Only one adult leader is needed until you get past 10 boys.  The boys in the troop elect OA members-must have 50% of the boys in the troop present and a boy must have 51% vote.

Old Business:
1.  Research committee--Chris B. stated that he would like to see us have 2 facilitators (not the adults currently working with the boys) to work with 2-3 designated boys.  This "committee" would then find out by poll or other methods of what the scouts would like to do, brain storm, suggestions etc.  These boys would then look into equipment, dates, drivers, money, etc. and get a rough plan on a trip to present to the greenbar for approval.  This committee could look into plans as far in advance as 2-3 years or just 6 months for any trip even outside of the state or for week long activities.  The pool of facilitators should perhaps be from outside the current leadership.  Once  an idea was formulated, the boys would then use their resources-current leadership to make firmer plans.  The facilitator would not be the one bringing ideas for trips, but encouraging the boys to formulate ideas on their own.  The facilitator would Help them to learn how to make a plan, not make it for them.
This was seen as a good idea and needs to be brought up at next week's parents meeting to see if someone is interested in this.  Does not require camping.

2.  Demerit/Reward System-Everyone was in favor of a positive system rather than demerits.  In the past the boys had set up a points system, but has not been used in some time.  Ideas included: patrol of the month with pizza as reward.  Thoughts included having a group of boys, a patrol, rather than individuals to encourage working together as a group rather than as individuals.  Also, pointed out it must be a system that does not favor either the older or younger boys.  Scott has volunteered to work on this.

3.  Eagles coming up-  Brian has asked for people to volunteer for guidance to these prospective eagle scouts and their projects.

4.  Summer Camp in the Blue Ridge-Trying to get some boys to go this year.  May need to offer spaces in order of descending age this year.  If the camp is good, maybe the whole troop can go next year.  Needs to be discussed at parents meeting as parents will have to drive 4-5 hours just to drop off kids.  Tom will make a presentation at the parents meeting next week.

I hope this is fairly correct.  There was a lot of discussion that was difficult to make notes from.  Please send corrections if needed.
