Blanc Mont |
Blanc Mont took place during much of the month of October. After repeatedly failing to take the ridge at Blanc Mont, in Champagne, the French Army needed new, energetic troops to aid in taking the crucial strong hold. American troops of the U.S. 2nd Division were called on to aid in the assault. The difficulty with Blanc Mont was that the troops would have to cross a long slope with little or no cover from German guns and artillery. |

For this offensive, the AEF troops of the 2nd Division were attached to the French 4th Army. It took the AEF troops about two hours to take the ridge, but then they had to defend against a series of German counter-offensives. After taking the ridge at Blanc Mont, the 2nd Division was sent to rejoin with the rest of the AEF. The taking of the ridge was significant because the Germans abandoned Champagne which they had occupied since 1914. |
