21 June 2005   -

6-21-05               distant highways hum

as the summer stars go by

                             outside my window

6-22-05              a full moon waits high

                             in the solstice evening sky

                             for the sun to set

6-23-05              west between the trees

                             twilight lingers in the sky

                             though midnight draws near

6-24-05              small white butterflies

rise as I sprinkle the lawn

                             with the garden hose

6-25-05              in the Saturn ahead

                             two teens are making out

                             like it's their limo

6-26-05              in the hazy sky

                             jet airplanes pass overhead

                             heard but never seen

6-27-05              he stops at the curb

then sprints in front of a car

                             squirrelly teenager

6-28-05              a counter top ant

                             flees in a crazy circle

                             back to my napkin

6-29-05              after sleepless hours

sweating in the night's still heat

                             suddenly, a breeze

6-30-05              in the WAL*MART queue

                             shirtless children are climbing

                             from cart to checkout

7-1-05                 the cool evening breeze

rustles the leaves — the grill's heat

                             feels comfortable

7-2-05                 from our plane: green veins

cut in the rock by rivers

                             the earth is alive

7-3-05                 the wind on Cub Lake

a stiff gray wind is pushing

                             lilies to one side

7-4-05                 a crying child flees

                             that pungent cloud where children

                             with their sparklers dance

7-5-05                 in the white water

                             a hidden rock wrenches us

                             we have a swimmer

7-6-05                 mountain tops won't yield

low clouds from the west get

                             deflected in the sky

7-7-05                 atop Mt. Elbert

                             the view is so majestic

                             but I feel dizzy

7-8-05                with tiny fingers

the boy tries catching bubbles —

                             every bubble pops

7-9-05                 from the patio

                             skittish sparrows hop inside

                             watch us eat our duck

7-10-05               summer's night-time sky

blue with crescent moon and stars

                             close enough to touch

7-11-05               at night a rabbit

                             in the wet garden nibbles

                             it's a smorgasbord

7-12-05               on the lighted stage

                             under a sycamore tree

                             Shakespeare tells his tale

7-13-05               minutes to midnight

my heart races — there's so much

                             left to do today

7-14-05               in the stifling night

above the drone of our fan

                             an airplane passes

7-15-05               near the cupola

                             atop the supermarket

                             pigeons are roosting

7-16-05               the rain comes down hard

hammers a week's worth of heat

                             back into the earth

7-17-05               a flash of lightning

in the still night begins it

                             now leaves are rustling

7-18-05               I stare down the well

                             looking for today's haiku

                             the well is empty

7-19-05               along the river

                             birds and teens are frolicking

                             in the summer heat

7-20-05              severed tentacle

                             coiled tight around my chopstick

                             — nope, it's fully cooked

7-21-05               from somewhere the wind

                             has been accelerating

                             summer cedes to fall

7-22-05              inside our bedroom

                             the curtains are billowing

                             the cool night enters

7-23-05              with familiar love

                             fingers stroke the cigarette

                             before flicking it

7-24-05              over our brown lawn

a breeze makes the grass quiver

                             soon this heat will break

7-25-05              inspiration strikes

so late — I pen my haiku

                             by summer moonlight

7-26-05              I spare a spider

                             while watering my garden

                             for its perfect form

7-27-05              still in the moonlight

                             two rabbits are threatening

                             to paw my concrete

7-28-05              under the sunset

                             as night construction begins

                             red taillights cluster

7-29-05              with baklava taste

in my mouth and on her breath

                             my love kisses me

7-30-05              revelers disperse

into the night as the moon

                             falls behind the trees

7-31-05               on the Garden Walk

                             people swarm to the backyards

                             bees swarm the flowers

8-1-05                 my dark nightmare fades

                             morning light and soft birdsong

                             gently wake me up

8-2-05                cool August mornings

I feel I'm at summer camp

                             the same homesickness

8-3-05                caught in the fabric

                             the half-broken mosquito

                             flops, flops, and is still

8-4-05                running the last mile

the evening wind picks up and

                             pushes us, cools us

8-5-05                the candle flickers

                             in the purple evening light

                             underneath our toast

8-6-05                in the empty sky

                             above the  cornfield there flies

                             two kites shaped like fish

8-7-05                on the veranda

                             an emerald hummingbird

                             drinks quick, flies away
