Descendants of (Peter?) Smith Sr.

Generation One

1. (Peter?)1 Smith Sr was born in 1754 in Prince William County, VA. He married (Agnes?) (--?--) circa 1774 in SC. He died on 30 Nov 1816 in GA.
(Agnes?) (--?--) was born circa 1754. She died after 1800.
Children of (Peter?)1 Smith Sr. and (Agnes?) (--?--) were:

Generation Two

2. Daniel2 Smith Sr. ((Peter?)1) was born circa 1774 in SC. He married ? (--?--) circa 1795 in SC or GA. He died circa 1837 in Henry County, GA.
Daniel Sr. was one of the first settlers in Henry County, GA -- "Georgia's Landmarks, Memorials, and Legends", page 680. He was a Justice of the Peace from 1824 to 1833 in Henry County. He sold 202 acres in Henry County, GA to his son Daniel Smith, Jr. on 3 Aug 1827. I believe he was born in South Carolina.
He is in these censuses: 1800 Oglethorpe County, GA, page 16; 1820 Columbia County, GA, page 36 or 51; 1830 Henry County, GA, page 200. He is listed in "Georgia Tax Digests, 1800-1802", page 20 in Oglethorpe County.
In the 1830 Henry County, GA census Daniel and Peter Jr. (page 230), who may be Daniel's brother, are near each other.
Daniel Sr.'s parents are most likely Peter Sr. (1754-1816) and Agnes. Peter Smith Sr. is in the 1790 and 1800 Spartanburg County, SC census. In 1790, page 87, he has one son who is 16 years of age or older (1774 or earlier). In 1800, page 201, he has a son 16 - 25 years old. That would be 1774/75 - 1783/84. So it narrows the birthdate to 1774. I believe 1774 is the date Daniel Sr. was born. There were three other Daniel Smiths in SC in relatively the same time period. One was born in 1752, son of Thomas. Another Daniel was born in 1766 to Charles. Another Daniel was born about 1788 to Fleming. None of these fit the date of birth of Daniel Sr. Also Daniel Sr. is the only one to go to Georgia. The others stayed in South Carolina or went to Virginia.

? (--?--) was born circa 1775. She died circa 1825 in Columbia or Henry County, GA.
Children of Daniel2 Smith Sr. and ? (--?--) were as follows:

Mom wrote about her childhood: "Our home was full of love and being taken care of by my grandmother, my father's mother. Her name was Nan Peppers. My mother worked in a textile mill from six in the morning until six at night. We would always get to go to the grocery store with her. And if Lucile and I scrubbed the kitchen floor, we would get five cents to spend at the store. My brother would haul the groceries home in his red wagon that he had got for Christmas.
"Our grandmother was a very strict person. We had to stay in our yard when we were not at school or being sent someplace. We had a place that we played in for hours at a time. It was a large barn that wood was kept in. The lady next door gave us her old catalogs, and we spent hours cutting out paper dolls. Our childhood was a happy one. We had good times with our friends at school which was located on an acre of land in front of our house.
"Our Christmas was really a good time. Our aunts and uncles from Florida always sent toys and books and clothes. One Christmas I got two pair of shoes. One pair had a $ 1 dollar bill tied to the string, but my grandmother wouldn't let me keep it. She bought new socks with it.
"Even though I was a shy little girl I was happy. We had no TV then, but people had time for each other. Our cousins came to see us on Sunday, or we went to their house. We always had a big dinner on that day. I got to go to church every Sunday. When I was six years old, I learned the books of the Bible, and lots of Bible verses too over the years. I got saved at 16, and ever since, church has meant a lot to me."
Her life was not always easy, but she seemed to see the bright side of things. I miss Mom very much. I believe she is still enjoying life -- her new life with Jesus and lots of people she knew here.
