A Day in Whitby, Town of Many Mysteries
Here lies...someone
St. Mary's, on the cliff of Whitby. To the left of the headstone is the beginning of the 199 steps to the town proper of Whitby. I heard a story about the 199 steps. The steps are really worn down, and the city planners decided to flip the stones in order to get a new stone for free. However, when they flipped the stone, the reverse side was already worn down. It seems that the city planners of Whitby, several centuries back, had the same inspiration as the current city planners.
See the grave with the nimbus of light? I think Dracula is buried there.
St.Mary's graveyard. The Southern cliff of Whitby is directly at my back. Bram Stoker wrote Dracula in Whitby--I wonder if he found inspiration at the same place where I stood that day?

Just a sidenote--we had fantastic weather for a British winter day.
My first fish-and-chips experience. Even among the British, who are known for their fish and chips, Whitby is especially known for its fish and chips.

This shot was taken inside the diner. I took the photo at the mirrored wall in the back of the diner so I could get both the words and St. Mary's in the background. It was one of my better photographic insights.

"Arrrgh, I see...fish, arrr"
The Southern cliffs of Whitby. St. Mary's graveyard is just peeking out at the extreme right of this photo.

Captain Cook came from Whitby, and as I
walked the pier, I thought about what Cook saw when he looked out on the same ocean I looked upon about 100 years later.
