1. In his "The Fall of the House of Usher," Edgar Allan Poe has created clear tone. Examine and provide examples of diction, details, imagery, and syntax that create the tone, then identify the tone itself (use your smart list for help)
During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country, and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher...I reined my horse to the precipitous brink of a black and lurid tarn that lay in unruffled luster by the dwelling...(with) vacant and eye-like windows.

Diction

Diction such as Oppressively, heavens, and melancholy offers the connotation of a deep long lasting sense of sadness.  These examples reinforce the tone because it makes the reader feel as though the narrator is trying to convey a feeling of eerie and supernstural power.

Details

Details such as I had been passing alone, on horseback and clouds hung low make a feeling of sadness and loneliness.  The narrator uses words words such as  alone and hung low these things make a feeling of sadness and that brings the reader to the level of the character.  It foreshadows what is next to come.

Imagery

The images all suggest darkness and loneliness.  Mostly visual images, these examples also convey a feeling of oppressive weight as the narrator makes his way to the house.  Images such as shades of evening can also be an allusion to ghosts or death, and the vacant and eye-like windows of the house suggest an eerie presence of supernatural danger.
