More Detailed Minutes from April 4

Questions facing SMHS about the transition to 7 periods after we decided not to pilot next year:

1.      Where do we go from here?

2.      What do we do with the sign-ups?

3.      Who is on the joint-committee? Do we have a place? When does it start?

4.      What recommendations do we want to make to the joint-committee? When is it going to be time to talk again in small or large groups?

5.      Do we have a timeline for next year that the SLT should be looking at?

6.      Should the next step be facilitated by the same people?  Can the Site Council be a forum for parent input?

7.      How should we try to develop communication between our school and the school(s) that are piloting next year?

8.      How can we get our needs negotiated by bargaining team?

9.      When do we need to start talking about schedules for the following year?

10.  Could the joint committee dictate the scheduling parameters?

11.  Extended day? How many tutorials? Start time? End time?

12.  How will tutorial fit in?

Responses from department chairs

Get a committee to represent the wide-variety of people here. December is too late.

We can only really decide after joint-committee meeting in December.

We should develop an advisory position b/c we don’t necessarily control the decision. Control the process as much as possible.

We need to have something to present. We need to know what our academic needs are. Do we still agree on the parameters on a schedule that we had before?

Jump on it! E-mail Sam to get representation on the j.c.

Action!  Before the end of the Year:

  1. E-mail Sam about our place on the joint committee (Til). Draft a letter from SLT to Union Pres and Sam (wait and see).
  2. Call together the volunteers for a committee here (Joyce). Set up a mechanism for collecting data. They will need a timeline-negotiations, etc. Jacquie can help with that.
  3. Find out our role in the bargaining/union (Miguel).
  4. Invite Sam to meet with SLT in May and October.

Next Meetings:

Before May: Joyce will arrange for a meeting time for the 7-period day committee

On May 2: Discuss committee progress, hear from Til about his conversation with Sam, plan how to assert our preferences to joint-committee/Sam/union
