Summer School
Cynthia asked for feedback on what should go into the new additions to the family handbook since the student planners are being discontinued.
Finals Schedule
SLT discussed the finals schedule. Ruth suggested a change to the proposed schedule, which had 1st period having a final on the Friday before finals week. Instead, Friday would be a minimum 1-7 day and Tuesday be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Wednesday will be 4th and 5th, and Thursday will be 6th and 7th period.
Jacquie insisted that the faculty approve the change by a 2/3 majority. Miguel agreed to handle the vote this week. Rich suggested that the ballot have the times.
Selection of New
API and Counselor
Rich talked about the interview process to replace Ron Beall.
Jacquie reviewed the process for selecting a new API. In addition to herself, Cynthia, a counselor, the dean, a clerical rep, a student, a parent and a district administrator, Jacquie wants two representatives from the SLT and a representative from the Faculty Senate.
There are many applicants from within and outside the district. The committee will need to decide if we are going to interview teachers from outside the district who are not currently administrators. Those candidates won’t have experience as an administrator or in this district.
Jacquie wants to conduct interviews during the week of May 2. This will give enough time to check references and do site visits if needed.
Jacquie suggested that any administrator at SMHS needs to know the climate and culture of the admin, staff, faculty, students, and parents. Rich suggested that an administrator must know that they will be involved in discipline in a different way than at other schools. Any candidate will have to see what is expected of them.
Jacquie asked Sam Johnson that we be allowed to interview because this faculty will not accept a blanket appointment. There will be no automatic transfer. Any AP in this district is welcome to apply.
Rich said that he is humbled, and perhaps flattered, by the number of hoops his replacement will have to jump through to get his job.
Jacquie asked that SLT members nominate another or themselves to be on the committee. Meetings to prepare will be after school. Actual interviews will happen on May 2-4 during the day. Visitations and follow up meetings will occur that May 7-9.
Master Schedule
Rich said that his last day is June 8, and he’s not changing; Ron’s last day may be around then also. What they have tried to do is start the process sooner and get most everything in the computer by May 4. They will run lists and numbers
Rich and Jacquie expect that the total numbers of incoming 9th graders will most likely be 350 to 380.
Department chairs should expect to use the numbers from this year to plan. Get something back to Rich by May 14.
Underperforming
Status
Jacquie reviewed the status of our status as underperforming school. We need to see if there are going to be budgetary restrictions that would affect our status. Transportation cuts, 7th period day cuts, CAHSEE scores in July could all direct our next steps.
Jacquie is going to ask some teachers to come together to decide on some corrective action for students who are under 2.0 GPA. She is waiting to see what we are going to have to do under NCLB. Mark Avelar’s retirement means we are in a bit of a holding pattern.
