More Detailed Minutes from March 7

7-Period Day Pilot for 2005/06 School Year

Issue: Do we want 6 or 7 periods next year?

Assumptions: Other schools will pilot. Union will not object. Cuts are made. Faculty decides.

Goal: Give Jacquie our unified position.

What we Know

What we  Need to Know

w     A teacher group can visit schools and see

w Will Board mandate minutes in 06/07?

w     More “redirection of funds” is possible

w Are we down 5% every year?

w     Board in favor of 7 periods

w Will unprepared students really benefit?

w     Athletics is not the intent of 7 per.

w What is the plan for long-term financing?

w     We will mandate 7th per. for needy kids

w Why would we not want to pilot?

w     More options will be available for all levels

w What is the stance of union?

w     Union recommends a study committee

w Will working conditions change?

w     Union says all schools go or none

w How many schools will pilot?

w     7 periods is a corrective action under NCLB

w How many schools can pilot?

w     7 periods does not necessarily mean more teachers or more classes

w Will teacher pay go down in the long-run?

w     We don’t yet know about how many sections or teachers we’ll need next year

w What about preps?

w Will we have evaluation of 7 per. plan

Question: Should we pilot a 7-period day next year (2005-06)?

Pro

Con

w        More freedom in designing and implementing our own schedule in 2005 and in 2006

w  We need more planning time

w        We’ll have more FTEs next year

w  We don’t know the nature of FTEs that are going to be retained

w        More Fine Arts students next year

w  We don’t know that long term plan for funding

w        We’ll learn more by doing it.

w  Should we put in the time to plan if only three schools are allowed to pilot and we are not one of the three schools

w        Full core starts next year

In summary: It’s happening anyway

In summary: We don’t know anything
