Summary of Actions
1. Cynthia reviewed the end of the year schedule
2. Martin reviewed the proposal to pilot AP European History
3. Rich suggested changes that should be implemented for next year to Family Information Night
Rich recommends that we do the following next year:
§ Cull the first half of the program so that the time in the PAC is shorter. Try to be done at 8:00 pm
§ Shut off the top floor of the main building and just use the main floor. We need to keep parents more centrally located.
Other people made other suggestions:
§ Keep the student videos high caliber
§ Cut out cheerleaders, winter guard
§ Band and theater should be connected together
§ Make sure that the core classes get more representation
§ Make sure that academics gets its fair share
§ Keep test scores in the classroom; don’t bore the kids
§ Get people out of the gym and into the building quickly
§ Parents are getting academic information, so keep the focus on what makes SMHS unique
§ Eliminate redundancy; Science, Social Science, English and Math could present together, for example
§ Tease them with data but allow them to go to classes to get more information
§ Keep the focus on day-to-day stuff
§ Help people see what life will be like for a kid while walking through the halls with 1,500 kids
§ Eliminate the gym; just have everything in the main building—hall ways, cafeteria, library. Three places are too many for parents to visit.
§ Keep data on success of the night
4. Rich reviewed the schedule for STAR testing and counselors’ scheduling because according to Rich Mozzini, our self-effacing Assistant Principal of Instruction, “testing turns him on.”
CST will occur after spring break: 4/10/7 through 4/11/7; and 4/17/7 through 4/18/7.
5. SLT discussed the choice of valedictorian and salutatorian. Much discussion ensued because of the weighting of grades. Chairs aired many theories of how to designate the important title of student with the “highest academic achievement” given the rigor of the different classes that make up the GPA.
Jacquie solved the problem with a clear statement and the establishment of a new award:
“The senior who has the highest academically weighted GPA will be valedictorian. Second highest will be salutatorian. Others with a GPA at 4.0 or above will be on the Principal’s Honor Roll. GPA will be determined according the weighting system in place during the students’ senior year.”
