More Detailed Minutes:
Til: Let’s open up with a reaction to what Sam said at the faculty meeting
Catherine: I didn’t understand whether we had to offer a full schedule in the 7th period.
Jacquie: every student needs to have the option to take the 7-period. We could negotiate into a 7-period day and then decide. Or the Board will decide and then we’ll negotiate a reaction. I imagine that’s what will happen. The board is going to probably discuss this issue in February about whether they will mandate a 7-period day, and the union will negotiate the reaction. If the board hears opposition from teachers, they may table it until next year. If they hear nothing, maybe the board will go ahead. It’s all pretty up in the air.
Ron: Will teachers teach 6 periods or 5 periods?
Jacquie: there are a number of things that could be negotiated. 5 or 6 periods? Start/end time? Consecutive periods?
Miguel: Has the district done the research or are we just saying OK, here we go? The 5 or 6 period thing could be war, for example.
Jacquie: the issue has been floated, but from a negotiating standpoint it makes me nervous.
The 3 FTEs estimate was based on teachers teaching 5 out of 7. You heard the ways that Sam said we could capture money.
Such as eliminating small classes
Behrooz: would that include AP, Special Ed., ELD, too?
Jacquie: not special ed, but yes. We will need to look at the classes that don’t have the enrollment.
Til: But the flipside of this is that by opening another class, we might free up the students to take more classes
Jacquie: I think that not many classes are because of conflict; most are because of low priorities.
Miguel: Has MPG had a serious discussion of the educational benefits of this thing? There are a lot of questions.
Jacquie: these are being discussed, but the hot issue is the large numbers of failing freshmen and what are we going to do about this. The principals have not formally discussed this—just informally. We are having a training and are probably going to discuss this. The board meeting means that Sam will have to get the issue moving now. Is it realistic to have 7 periods next fall?
Nate: One way or another we are going to get blindsided. Maybe we should just say, “no thanks, not this year. We’ve got a new building and enough on our plate.” Maybe the board would listen.
Miguel: maybe if there were answers and a reasonable plan, we could do it. But as it is we
Til: I have witnessed the shift and we need to be politic. We need to be in the mix to be a part of the decision.
Nate: but maybe we could issue a statement as department chairs that says, let’s do it the following year.
Ron: is it realistic for next year?
Jacquie: the timeline is crucial. February will have to be it. For the first time, I have heard the word “reconstitution” We have to make sure that we have in place interventions to support the failing students. Creating a 7-period day says we are visibly taking action. There is a 50-50 chance that we would go to 7 periods.
Catherine: Larger numbers in AP really worry me.
Jacquie: when the negotiations begin, it would be better to have our schedule figured out.
Linda: Maybe the task is for us to figure out how to do a 7 period day. It seems the main thing is how it would look here. If we focused on that and told the board that, then we might have some influence.
Jacquie: If the board mandates it in February, then we go ahead and develop a schedule. Even if the board doesn’t go 7 period, we could go with it as a school, which would offer interventions for the students who need assistance.
Til: if we go to the staff, we could present several different schedules and then start the discussion. The next step seems to me to be to set up the parameters: do we want to have 1 through 6 and then 7th period at the end of the day. There are a long list
Jacquie: If SM says 2/3 of the faculty agree with 7 periods, then that’s a strong message. We can start the year without a contract we can schedule and move ahead if we get word in February.
Behrooz: Let’s say the CTA negotiates, how do the reps determine our school’s position?
Jacquie: Survey and then Daria brings the word back to negotiations.
Til: In the last 6 minutes, can we come up with parameters? Let’s make a list:
Central Question for 7-Period Day
Does it do anything to help our failing students?
Parameters
1.
offer a
class just for the CHSEE
2.
make sure
that the students who need it are enrolled in the class
Nate: Reconstitution is a more compelling issue than this 7-period day discussion if we are not going to hear word from board before February 7. I say we abandon this issue and discuss how to meet the needs of students to pass the CHSEE.
Til: Let’s see what happens before February and then decide on that day about what our agenda is.
Rich: CAHSEE information
Two years ago, we missed our participation by a few kids
Last year we didn’t score in the range for a couple of groups
This year, what are we doing now? February 8th and February 9th
This year, proficient is 380 (NCLB), not 350 (Federal). Every subgroup’s score needs to get double the questions correct they got last year correct.
Nicolene McMullen and Yuzo Ishizaki have the students who have a chance to get 380. We targeted the target groups.
They have these students during tutorial focusing on this material.
Especially these next weeks, we will be focusing on the study guides for the CHSEE.
Based on the increase in the API, there is obviously more teaching that helps the CST. But we need to support the CHSEE.
Here’s the plan
330 10th Graders
32 ELD with Watson
38 SPED with Vasquez
101 4AS English in Gym – counselors and McCabe
159 4CP English with 6 10th-grade tutorial teachers
3 ½ hours even though many might be done.
8-12:40 both days to keep things less intrusive
