Premis: I believe the school culture at San Mateo is changing.

Evidence:

  • Cleanliness

Dirty

More tagging

Students eating in halls and classrooms

Littering

  • Student behavior

Loitering in halls

Disrespectful of adults

Know that avoidance sometimes works

Lack of respect toward adults

Teachers don’t feel safe

  • Resources

Lack of white paper in copy rooms

Lack of board pens, paper towels, Kleenex, printer paper, etc.

Lack of Security

No program for nonacademic kids (kids failing all subjects)

  • Communication

Administrative assistants change location – hard to locate

How do you know if a student made it to the health office, dean, counselor – how to follow up?

How to get individual books from book room

Students must have an admit to come to class, but attendance clerk can’t listen to all messages before school.

Cause:

Cutbacks and adjustments made at the beginning of this year

New policy of acceptance of students at Peninsula

Work to rule by teachers

Concern: We need to look at the changes made this year and the effects they are having and consciously accept the direction the school is going or consciously make changes to reverse this new direction.

Possible Outcome of Acceptance or not addressing issues:

Teachers no longer trying to help whole school – just working within their classroom/department. (ie individual tardy policies, eating policies, dress codes, etc.)

Staff leaving for other locations/careers

Open for discussion:

Do others agree?  Overall, yes. One SLT member voiced discent.

Other examples of changes? Added to the list.

Ways to remediate?

  1. Talk with your department regarding these issues
  2. Identify what we can address. What changes can teacher behavior affect? What changes must be more global (i.e. programs for non-achieving students)
  3. SLT will choose an issue at the start of next year and work toward improvement
