Syrian Hamsters
Syrian hamsters are also knows as goldens, teddy bears, fancys, and black bears. These are all just terms for one breed of hamster, the Syrian. Syrians come in many different colors and patterns, so you'll often hear other terms like "dalmatian hamsters", which are just Black Dominant Spot Syrians. For a good representation of Syrian colors check out AAA Hamsters

Syrians are the largest breed of hamster, and measure about 6 inches long as adults. Females are usually a bit larger than males. Syrians are solitary, and MUST be kept alone. Don't believe anyone who keeps their syrians together and says they don't fight! For further reading on Syrians being solitary check out this article: Syrians Are Solitary
Males and females are equally good pets. Males have a reputation for being more laid-back, but you'll find exceptions both ways. :) Females go into heat every four days, when they are ready to breed. During this time (usually lasting overnight or a day) they will produce a faint odor, some would describe as "musty". I've had both males and females, and they're both great pets.
My female Syrian, Gabby.
My male Syrian, Ryley.
