Section A: What are some reasons for preserving ones family heritage? Use examples from A Celebration of Grandfathers, Everyday Use, and your own experience with heritage.

Our world is composed of lot of countries, and a country is established by a society. Also, as we learned in sociology class that society is formed of lot of families. However, those families are all different. They each have their own kind of heritage, which make every family different. From the statement ahead we could know that heritage is the most basic composition of our world. Then what is heritage?

Heritage in dictionary meaning is Something passed down from preceding generations which is similar to tradition. However, why should we preserve our own heritage? Even if heritage seems not useful to us it is significantly useful to us and make people mature, in living in this society and will be useful to our descent. For example, heritage such as Simple Lessons could be useful to one person. It might make one live a better life by knowing the simple lesson. Considering the usefulness of heritage, we should continually preserve each owns heritage.

By reading stories such as Celebration of Grandfathers and Everyday use, the readers can know more about the advantages of preserving ones family heritage. As an example, in Celebration of Grandfather, the grandfather was very strict but nice to everyone, and all the short sayings that he said was a kind of heritage. Thus the book says that Simple lessons from a simple man. Nevertheless, by learning the lessons the narrator becomes more mature. In addition, by reading Everyday use, readers could realize that by preserving heritages, we could feel the mind and spirit of our ancestors. In last, in my family we have a heritage that we should always do a certain action on ones birthday, by doing it our family becomes more centralized than before.

Section B: What can and should an ordinary person do about the cruel treatment of others? Give two examples of cruelty and what you consider to be appropriate responses. You can also gain other ideas from other literary works and from reading From Night, Cranes, The Artilllerymans vision, and The Remembered War: A Korean War Vet Offers a History Lesson.

In this enormous world, there are many types of people. For example, there are people who are nice, kind, cruel, and etc. However, not all types of people are favored in this world. People who treat other people cruelly could be considered as people not needed in this society. Thus, shouldnt we change those to a better person and develop our country as more peaceful country?

Most people think Cruelty as being mean and destructive to other people. Nevertheless, to specify cruelty, I could specify it in two meanings. One is Harming people who havent done anything incorrect. Second one is Not helping others who are in lower class then you. People could not think the second one as being cruel but it is.

A good example for the first definition I stated could be the Nazi concentration camp. It was a camp that Hitler put the Jews in a camp and giving them hard works to do. The reason that Hitler established this camp was, he hated his father who was Jews and started to hate all the Jews. However, the malicious thing about the camp was that innocent people were in their. Moreover, over the best responses for us to do is to make people like Hitler feel the pain and the harshness of the camp. Then cruel people would start to recognize how cruelly treated people feel and stop their harmful actions.

The rich using their left over moneys for their own good could be a great example for the second definition of Cruelty I stated above. It might not seem cruel, but it is if we see it in the view of the poor. Even if the rich use their spare money on them it doesnt change their life at all. On the other hand, if the rich help the poor by giving money, that would affect the poors life a lot. Thus, as I said above, if the rich dont help the poor, the low class would think the rich as cruel. For the response, ordinary people should recall about the poor to the rich by showing video clips and through campaigns.

Section C: Compare and contrast the mothers in Getting a Job and Everyday Use. Connect it to your own family experience.

Two of the stories that we read in this semester was the Everyday Use, and Getting a Job. However, in both stories mother appeared as a character. As always did in stories, those characters have similar and different characteristics with each other. In the following paragraphs I would like to compare and contrast the mothers.

While reading this story the readers could find a variety of similarities of two mothers. For example, both of them have a strong opinion on a specific idea. In Every day use, even though Dee wants the quilts, but mother never let down her opinion of not giving it to her lovely daughter Dee. Also in Getting a Job, when Maya fails to get employed, mother tell her not to give up and say Give it everything youve got. Ive told you many times, Cant do is like Dont Care. Neither of them have a home. In my life I can find those kinds of similarities through my mother. For example, once I wished to give up going to a foreign language high school(FLHS). However my mother didnt let me do that, and kept saying her opinion that I could get in to the FLHS and her decision is right in this FLHS problem between my mother and me.

In contrast to the similarities, in this paragraph I would state some differences of two mothers. Through reading both stories, we could know that they both have different characteristics. Mother in Everyday use is actually characterized as big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. However, we could suspect that mother from Getting a Job is not like the mother from Everyday use. The most different thing between two mothers I found was the closeness between mother and daughter. We could know that in Everyday use Dee and mother are not really friendly. In contrast, in Getting a Job mother and daughter is unlike Dee and her mother. Any how, the relationship between Maya and her mother is similar to my familys relationship.
