Compare and contrast: One Thousand Dollars and Getting a Job.

This semester, in English classes we have covered two stories, One Thousand Dollars and Getting a Job. Both stories were interesting stories and both gave me a good lesson on how to live a good life. Anyhow I would like to compare and contrast the main characters, themes, and etc of two stories.

I would like to mention whether the stories are fiction or not. The main differences of two stories would be that Getting a Job is a nonfiction, and One Thousand Dollars is a fiction. Reminding our knowledge, fiction is a narrative that springs from the imagination and nonfiction is a writing that is about real people, places. Autobiography would be a great example of nonfiction. However, even though both stories are classified as different type of stories, they both have expositions, rising actions, climaxes, and falling actions.

In a story there are main characters that are material in the story, however the characteristic of those main characters are not all the same in every stories. Anyhow, the main character of the story Getting a Job, is Maya Angelou, and for the story One Thousand Dollars, it is Gillian. First the main discrepancy of those two characters is that Maya Angelou has an exact and precise opinion about her, but in contrast Gillian depends on other people opinions and thinking. In the story Getting a Job we could see that even though Maya Angelou is black, she does not abnegate her dream. She gives much attention to achieve her goal. Even though her goal is too hard for her to attain easily, she attempt again and again. Nevertheless, in the fiction One Thousand Dollars we could realize Gillians dependence from the parts Gillian asking abundant people about how to use his own money.

In literature, theme is one of the most relevant literary terms. Theme is the central idea or message in a work of literature, which is in every story. Even themes of two stories are different. In Getting a Job Maya decides what she wants to be, knows much about herself and has a dream which is not that possible to achieve. However, Maya never gives up her dream of getting a job on street cars and copes with difficulties that she confronts. In result, after all she achieves her dream. This tells us that if we have a dream and never abandon it, we will attain our dreams one day. In contrast, Gillian who appears in One Thousand Dollars doesnt know who he really is in the first part. As the story goes on he gets to find out the truth of himself as he experiences much stuff. This reminds us that, to know more and exactly about ourselves we should go through lot of events.

To conclude, both stories were relevant stories which were really beneficial to me. It gave me an apt lesson how to success when I become an adult. The story One Thousand Dollar made me think that just sitting on a chair and studying is not a way to success. We should get in to the big society and experience the society which many events are occurring. In addition Getting a Job instigated me that I should never relinquish my dreams even if I have a hard time accomplishing my goals and this story also gave fervor to me.
