Buffy Babe TV HITS MAGAZINE MARCH 1999 Issue #127
Sarah Michelle Gellar's not just one of your hottest babes alive, she's one of the sweetest gals around! Our lucky LA Editor, Steven Gidlow, caught up with her on the set of Buffy.
Congratulations on being voted the fifth Hottest Woman on Earth by TV HITS!
Wow! I wasn't aware of that. Actually I love Australia. I was there for about two months right before I started the show - it's one of my favourite places and I can't wait to get back there. I just haven't had enough time, but thank you so much! I'm probably just as big on Australia as they as on me. So thanks, everyone!
How are things going on Buffy?
We're incredibly busy at the moment trying to get an episode finished. I'm getting, like, seven minute breaks - hopefully I'll get time to go to the bathroom at some stage!
Do you sit back and watch Buffy?
Well, when it airs here in the US I'm usually still at work - and I am working! I can't remember the last time I got out early enough to watch one. I actually don't watch the final cut of the show, but I am a fan. I love getting the scripts, but I'm a little too critical when it comes to myself.
Do you think the show has made vampires more popular?
I think we might have brought them to the forefront. The thing about vampires is they are a sexy monster. We don't play them as scary ugly people. They're something very seductive about them and their lure.
Who do you reckon the sexiest vampire of all time is?
Angel, of course! But I'm not supposed to know that he's a vampire yet so I probably shouldn't say that! But Tom Cruise and Antonio Banderas definitely. That's an easy question.
We know you and your co-star Alyson Hannigan are buddies cause we spied you shopping in LA the other day!
(Laughs) Oh my god! That day we had facials then decided to hit the Fred Segal sale (trendy store that's a fave of Leo's), but that was a nightmare and we left very quickly.
Do you hang with the other cast members after work?
Yeah it's a pretty close knit group. Well, as close as anyone can be that works together nine months of the year. I mean, we have our fights, and our good and bad days. I guess Alyson and I are probably the closest, but everyone once in a while we all go to dinner as a group.
Buffy definitely has girl power - we reckon you should replace Ginger Spice in the Spice Girls!
Hey, Buffy Spice! I'm ready! But really, I think the Spice Girls are doing just fine without me, thank you very much.
Are male fans cautious of you because they're scared you can kick their ass?
Well, I know how to look after myself, but I haven't had that problem.
How do you manage all the stunts?
I study martial arts. I go to the gym a lot in the morning before work or after work and there's always the weekends. But thing about the show is there's a little bit of gymnastics involved so I get a bit of a workout as I'm working. But last night at 1am I really wasn't enjoying myself. The only problem with the show is there's a lot of night work.
And you guys film in a real cemetery late at night, don't you?
Well, luckily we don't have to too much any more. We did in the first season, but now we've built our own cemetery so now a lot of our night scenes are done on the set.
Halloween must be a cool time of year for you - do you delve into the make-up department for costumes?
Let's put it if this way - if it's a day off I don't be wearing any make-up at all.
You've got such a cool job - you've worked twice with Ryan Phillippe and you get to smooch Angel.
Oh, I know, I have it sooo rough. I also got to work with Sean Patrick Flannery too. Two movies with Ryan - and they pay me too! (laughs)
Do you get recognised much?
I have a private life that's completely separate from what I do and when I go home at night that's my life. You never really get used to people coming up and asking for autographs, but you learn how to handle it.I always have that feeling of "Oh my god, is there toilet paper stuck to my shoe?" or "Did I not button my shirt properly?" when people recognise me.
Do you hang with celeb mates often?
Well, Ryan and I are very good friends and have been for eight years. Freddie Prinze Jr. is a good friend.
If TV HITS readers visited the Buffy set, where would they find you hanging out?
Probably asleep in my trailer!
