Getting started with BOINC:

Just a few words here about the project. There are a lot of more competent instructions and FAQs about distributed computing. This is the important part for gamers: Distributed computing projects use the resources of your comp, that you do  NOT need while working or playing with your comp. And with today's processors, there is a lot left!

Distributed computing means, that a real huge piece of work is split into many small pieces and sent to thousands or hundred of thousands  of other comps around the world. These results are far better then any supercomputer could ever do!

Can I run BOINC while playing Gettys?

Yes you can! Gettysburg is build for a Pentium 90! This is ridiculous compared to modern systems. Probably you will never notice that there is something running in background while you are playing! Most likely you can run BOINC with many more games, which have much higher system minimum requirements. Normally this would just result in less work done for BOINC, because the process is running on low priority and just takes what is left.

Although, if you are playing some shooters, who need every FLOP that your comp can give, you might be disturbed by BOINC. Then you simply turn it off... ;).

Does BOINC do any damage to my comp?

Simply: no (if you don't ruin it yourself by amateurish overclocking!) Every comp is build to run at 100% of CPU usage. While you are hanging around at the Gettys Lobby, and while playing Gettys you will probably only use 20 or 30% or your comps resources! So, if you have a "normal" working comp, there cannot be any damage! And if you have an overclocked comp that cannot run stable, you will ruin it anyhow sooner or later !.

How do I join Picard's Charge?

Go to our team page here. If you already have an account for Seti, select "join". If  you don't have an account yet, select "Create team account URL" or directly click this link. It will take you there.

One tip left to get started: if you are new to Seti,  never use the screensaver or the graphics. Rendering the graphics is a lot of work for your comp. This is why we do not have a screensaver with our Society banner. Of course, if you like to view the graphics, enjoy.....no problem about that!

Oh yes, and welcome to our Team, have fun crunching!
