What Dreams May Be By Klutz If I'm dreaming Please don't wake me up 'Cause baby I can't get enough Of what you do… Serena stifled a yawn. This had to be the most boring class she had ever taken. She glanced around the room as her teacher, Mrs. Curtis went on about some math equation. Ami Mizuno, the girl who sat in front of her looked bored to, but only because she had learned all this in her spare time in grade two. 'That girl is too smart for her own good. Nice, very friendly, but way too smart.' The boy to her left, Melvin Gurio looked so interested she almost laughed. He was taking notes a mile a minute, but in the border of his page were notes about his latest gossip. Melvin was the class nerd, and he definitely had too much time on his hands. Now the guy to her right, he was interesting. Darien Shields, tall, dark, handsome, smart, interesting and funny, all with a mysterious air. The guy was like James Bond or something, it was scary. Every girl in the city had a thing for him, but he didn't seem to notice. He treated all girls pretty much the same, like good friends. The only person he acted oddly towards was herself, calling her 'Meatball Head' because of her odd hairstyle. It took all her will power to yell at him every time he called her that, she definitely didn't want to come off like all the other girls who fawned over him day and night. She was independent, tough, and she didn't need anyone! Serena swallowed another yawn and looked down at her paper, doodling aimlessly. This was so boring! 'Hm, wouldn't it be great to be somewhere else right now? Like at a masquerade, the kind they had all the time way back in the day. Oh, those look so cool… I'd wear a long white dress, and put flowers in my hair and meet a totally sweet guy with deep blue eyes, just like Dariens….' Soon deep in a daydream, Serena didn't hear any of the lesson after that. Darien shifted uncomfortably in his seat. This class was taking forever! Was that clock moving backwards? He could have sworn it was… He glanced out of the corner of his eye to the right. That odd girl, Molly Osaka sat there. She was nice enough, but seemed just a bit too flaky to him. In front of him sat Lita Kino. She was nice if you got to know her, but get on her bad side and BAM! You'd wind up in the hospital! She could fight like nothing he'd ever seen before. Now to his left, that was interesting. The only truly interesting girl in the whole school in fact. Serena Tsukino more commonly referred to as Meatball Head. Long blonde hair, deep blue eyes, sweet, kind, funny, smart… and apparently very bored by the way her eyes were glazed over as she stared into the same doodle she had been drawing for five minutes. 'Nice dress.' He thought, scanning the doodle. 'I think she's day-dreaming, that looks like one of those masquerade dresses….' He wished he could take her to one of those, but they didn't happen very often these days. 'If I could go to one of those, I would wear my best Tuxedo, and a mask and a cape, and I'd bring roses, and sweep her off her feet!' Darien sighed and fell into a daydream as well. ********* BRING!!!!!!!!!!!! Class was over, and Darien and Serena snapped out of their respective dazes. "Wait! Before you leave class, I have an important note! There will be a masquerade dance this year for valentines, which you all know, is this Friday. Dismissed!" Serena gaped at the teacher for a few moments, then gathered up her books, leaving the class and heading for her locker. Darien grabbed up his books when he saw her leaving. This was perfect; he would do it, this Friday. But first he had to go pick out a few things, like the perfect Tuxedo. ********* FRIDAY Serena checked her hair again, making sure the flowers would stay in place before settling the small white domino mask on her nose. Perfect! No one would know who she was, she had taken down the Meatballs. Grabbing her bag, she called good bye to her mom and stepped out into the cool night air. Rei, Ami, Lita and Mina, four of her good friends, were waiting in the car. Since Lita was born earlier in the year, she already had her license, or would soon. Any police who stopped her would be sorry though. ^_^ "Hey Guys, you all look great!" she commented, sliding in next to Rei in the back seat. Ami gave her a shy smile and said thanks. Mina however, was more outright. "Hey Sere! You look great too, I almost wouldn't recognize you with your hair down like that!" she squealed. "Thanks Mina, you look great too." The ride was filled with such conversations, until Lita parked outside the school. Slipping out of the car, they all walked silently inside. The gym looked different than it usually did. The walls were dark, the room was dark, but there were small twinkling pale pink and white lights strung up and more light around the snack table which was near the door. The other girls wandered into the crowd, but Serena hung back against one wall, scanning the crowd. 'It was just a silly day dream, I know, but it seemed so real and if there is a guy here….' Her eyes fell on one man walking through the crowd towards her, in a black tuxedo and domino mask, just like everyone else there, but there was something different about him. She could see deep blue eyes peeking out from the mask, just like the ones in her dream. He stopped in front of her, executing a small bow. "Milady, may I have this dance?" She nodded and took his hand, slipping onto the dance floor. He had recognized her like that, with her hair down, even if no one else did. He felt he could pick her out blindfolded in a room full of millions of people. Standing in the center of the gym, they danced to every song for a long time. 'This feels so perfect… if this is a dream, I hope I never wake up. Just don't let that bell ring…' Song after song after song they danced, until finally Serena pointed to the door. Her feet were tired, she needed a break. He nodded and took her arm, leading her through the crowd to outside. Taking a bench that sat under a cherry tree near the doors, they sat down in silence for a few moments. "So, what classes are you in this semester?" Serena asked finally. He smiled. "The same ones as you basically." He replied. She was surprised. "You recognize me?" she asked. He nodded. "Always. You're different from anyone I've ever met before." 'The same classes as me? Oh, please say this is who I hope it is…' "Thank you, but who are you? I don't recognize you with that mask on." He smiled. "I would tell you, but that would ruin the surprise. Would you like some punch?" She nodded. Hopefully he would tell her before the dance was over, he had dark hair like he did, and the eyes seemed to match… She followed him inside again where he poured out to glasses of the punch and handed her one. "To new beginnings." He said simply, and they toasted. 'New beginnings? From what, the name? If it is you… Oh, I hope…' They drank their punch and danced some more, he held her close and she rested her head on his shoulder, he seemed so familiar. The night was soon over though, and they wound up at that bench again. "If you could come here Monday, at lunch? I'll be here, you'll know who I am then, please?" he asked. She nodded, but leaned in and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. "For luck. I hope this isn't a dream." She replied. He smiled, then leaned down and kissed her too. "I hope so too. See you Monday, Princess." And he was gone. Serena sighed and walked to the parking lot, climbed into the back of Lita's car in a daze and didn't say anything the whole way home. Monday was so far away. The whole weekend Serena sat around dreamily, anywhere and everywhere. Monday was coming, and she was glad. [********] MONDAY, LUNCH Serena pulled her lunch out of her locker and closed it, snapping the lock back in place nervously. Darien had acted totally normal during all her classes that morning, maybe she was wrong? Maybe it hadn't been him? Pushing her shoulders back, she walked outside and sat down on the bench where they had sat that night last week. Untying the knots on her pink stars-and-moons lunch bag, she pulled out a small container. 'Lets see what Mom packed today… Mmm! Foh! (I don't know how to spell it, but it sounds like 'oh!' with an f in front.) I love this stuff!' she thought, picking up her chopsticks and grabbing a bite of it. 'Foh' is a noodle meal with meat and vegetables, and some other good stuff. It tastes awesome, like nothing I've ever had before. A shadow fell across her just as she shoveled another bite into her mouth. She looked up to find none other than Darien Shields standing there with his lunch bag. "Is this seat taken?" he asked. She shook her head 'no' and tried her best to swallow everything that was in her mouth. "Um, hi." 'Great opening Serena. That sounded so nervous!' 'You are nervous stupid!' 'Oh, right. But do I have to sound like it?' There was silence for a few more minutes. Finally Darien just went for it. "Serena, I've got to tell you, I, well, I really like you, I have for a long time. I just never really had a chance to say so before, but last night I had to and- " Serena grinned and placed two fingers on his mouth. "Hey it's alright. I was hoping it was you." She said. He blinked. "You were?" "Mhm." She smiled at him. "Really?" Serena rolled her eyes. "Okay, so I didn't want to come off all ditzy like the other girls, so I kind of yelled at you a lot, but really… I kind of like the nick name, it's sweet, just like you." He smiled. "She likes me!' "Would you, um, like to go see a movie maybe tonight?" he asked. "I'd love too!" she replied and gave him a quick kiss again, but he pulled her in and it lasted much longer than it was supposed to. Pulling away finally she smiled, feeling light headed and giddy. "Is that a thank you?" she asked. He grinned. "Nope, this is!" That went on for some time. The end! Short, but hopefully sweet.
