DEDICATED TO THE BEST 'BEST FRIEND' I'VE EVER HAD, THE ONE AND ONLY ROSE-CHAN *****QUEEN OF LEGENDS***** Part Eight: Allies and Enemies Rated: PG, for darkness, and potential violence By: Sailor GlitterGirl At: sailorglittergirl@sailormoon.com "Shazal," She hissed. "Hello, my darling Serenity." The voice snickered. "I'm flattered you remember me." Serena remained silent, absolutely repulsed that this guy was even TOUCHING her. "You know, darling, you never did answer my question last time we met." Shazal continued, a finger stroking her arm. "You are quite remarkable, in many ways. I could make you into something. Something worthwhile. For instance, I forget I caught you trying to break into the Royal Office, I could forget-" "Yes, you can and will forget, Shazal," A new voice said evenly, darkly, a hint of disgust in the voice. Shazal whirled, one hand still clutching Serena's. A swift twist and jab with her fingernails produced a shriek of pain from Shazal, as well as the result of freeing her. Spinning out of his grip and jumping away, Serena turned enough to see a tall, dark figure in black with a dark blue tunic, arms crossed, glaring. "Good morning, your highness," Serena said evenly, still keeping her gaze on Shazal. "Good morning, Miss Serenity," Darien replied, then turned his attention to the glowering lord. "Tell me, Shaxal, aren't you hungry? I believe breakfast is waiting. And you, Miss Serenity?" "Famished." Serena said coolly, and walked down the corridor, towards and then past Darien, keeping an eye on Shazal as long as possible. Only once she was past him did Prince Darien turn and follow her. "Nice talking to you again, Shazal," Darien called back. Serena could almost feel the anger radiating off of Shazal, warming her back. "Thank you, your highness," Serena said, seemingly through clenched teeth. She narrowed her eyes as she looked straight ahead. "I am in your debt." "Don't be," Darien said lightly. He sighed, and Serena felt a strong hand clamped down onto her elbow, pulling her aside. "Listen, princess, I owe you an apology," The Prince said, rather quietly. Serena's eyebrows shot up, and she looked up at him, startled. Whatever she'd been expecting it wasn't THIS! "What...what for?" She demanded, her voice softer. "For doubting you." He hung his head, "I was a jerk and a royal pain, and I know it." He looked up at her, smiling a smile that nearly melted the golden hair beauty into a puddle of pudding. "Forgive me, Lady Serenity?" Darien asked. "Does...does this mean that...that Dr. Anderson has won his bet?" Serena asked cautiously. "That is does." Darien nodded. "They began work on the construction of Lunar Academy yesterday, and it is to be dedicated to you and your friends." Serena was reeling by now. She had never in a million years expected a noble to apologize to her for ANYTHING! Let a lone a prince, or THIS prince! "I admit I was wrong, my lady, and I humbly ask your forgiveness," Serena looked at the man that was looking down at her with true sincerity. "I...I accept..." She said, still somewhat cautiously. A brilliant smile covered his lips, and he swooped her into a hug. Shrieking, Serena gasped for air. The Prince laughed and set her down, then reached for something in his pocket. "Here, this is for you," he said, holding out a small velvet box. "A sort of peace offering, I suppose." Cautiously, Serena took it, and opened the box slowly, looking at the prince with a sly eye. Glancing down once the box was open, she gasped, her eyes going wide. It was a large electrum ring, a costly and hard to make mixture of the purest silver and gold, set with diamonds and pearls, the delicate and costly metal was wound into an intricate patern, forming an unmistakable seal. "The symbol of the People's Elite..." Serena whispered. "These haven't been seen in decades...Why now?" Serena looked up at the Prince with wide, trusting eyes, and Darien felt himself reel with shock. How long had he wanted her to look at him with something other than hate and loathing? Now she was gazing up at him with wonder in those large, star kissed sapphires. Regaining himself, Darien chuckled and took the box from her, plucking the ring from it's slit and reaching for Serenity's hand. "Lady Serenity Lunari," Darien said as he slipped the ring on her middle finger of her left hand. "Over the past few months, you have portrayed a great loyalty not only to those you care about, but to your people. I am putting you in charge of a new legion of special and elite spies/warriors. These people will be in charge of ensuring the safety of the people, making sure that they are being treated fairly, and that their over lords and nobles give them what they are due. "But that is not all." Darien went on. "You will be commanding the People's Elite, the new legion I mentioned. They will do all that you command, and you will be doing the things I just mentioned. But the People's Elite will also make sure that the other various sorts of soldiers treat the people correctly, as well, and on top of that, ensure that the people do not rebell, and ensure that they don't have a REASON to rebell. "All in all, you will be keeping myself and all other royals and nobles in line when it comes to treating others of lower positions than us fairly. Do you accept?" For a full five minutes, all Serena could do was stare at her ring, then at the prince, then back to her ring agan, and back to the Prince Darien. Finally, once the realization had sunk in, Serena threw herself into the arms of the Crown Prince, a brilliant smile lighting up her very being as she gripped the heir with all her might. Laughing, Darien simply hugged her back. "I'll take that as a yes?" Darien laughed. Pulling away very self conscious, Serena squared her shoulders, and curtsied. "My life and my sword is yours, highness," she pledged, and rose, smiling for real for the first time in a long, long while. "Good, I accept," The prince nodded, he, too was smiling. "I would like you and your group to meet me and my Generals by the lake tonight, on foot, after dinner." "Will do." Serena nodded as the prince continued walking, and she followed, falling into step beside him. "Oh, and don't tell anyone about this, all right?" Darien asked suddenly. "I have reasons. If the nobles found out, they might get...unpleasant, and could have me dethroned, if they got mad enough." "Wh-" "Don't ask now; it's complicated." He cut her off. "Please? That's what the meeting tonight is for." He gae her a wristfull look. "It's to explain just why I've been a jerk." "All right." She said, nodding, her brow creased in slight puzzlement. They stopped before the large doors that led into the dining all, and Darien gripped the handles, ready to pull them open himself, ignoring the attendants on both sides, when Serena placed her hand over his. "How did we go from being mortal enemies to comrades in under ten minutes?" She asked, not really expecting a reply. "Well, saving a damsel in distress and then giving her a ring can have that affect," The prince said, smiling at her glaring eyes and opened the door and walked in, Serenity at his side. Serena had to stifle a laugh at the looks her friends gave her when they saw her enter while laughing and glaring playfully with the prince, and he with her, winking at the golden beauty as he made his way to the head of the table, with two of his Generals on either side. Serena smiled back as she sat at her own spot, halfway down the long table, two of her friends on either side. "Don't ask," Serena said, holding up both hands on either side of her as all four of them simontaniously snapped out of their shocked reverie, their mouths opening to bombard her with questions. "You guys will hear all about it later on," she said as she saw them open their mouths once again. Their faces fell, but Mina, on Serena's right, suddenly pounced on Serena's right hand that she had halfway lowered. "What in the..." Mina trailed off as she saw the insignia. "Serena, do you know what this *is?* Where did you get it?" She looked up at Serena with wide eyes. Serena, looking around frantically, quickly snatched her hand away and twisted the ring so that the tiny seal was on the inside of her hand, only the simple silver-gold band showing outwardly. "Sssshhhh!" she hissed quietly to Mina. "Not a word of this to anyone! Not even to the other Senshi." Mina opened her mouth to protest, but Serena put a finger to it, looking around to make sure no one had noticed. "I promise I'll explain later." She said quietly. Reluctantly, Mina nodded, and turned back to her meal, thoughts and suggestions swimming through her head like a whirl pool. Something told her that their stay in the palace from then on would be quiet different somehow. *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* "Alright, Rena; SPILL!" Mina pounced on Serena the moment they were all safe in Raye's rooms, the decorations creating the illusion that you were inside a dancing flame. "Spill what?" Serena asked innocently. The girls all rolled their eyes simontaniously. "Serena, one day you and the Crown Prince Endymion are at each others throats," Lita told her, plopping down and giving her an incredious look. "You trying to prove what an egotisticle jerk he is, along with how evil nobles are, and he trying to prove just how low peasants. "Now all of the sudden you walk in the door lauging and smiling and looking like best friends." "Plus he WINKED at you!" Mina added. "And WHAT is with that ring? The one I'm betting he gave you?" Shrieks and esclaimation of 'can I be a bridesmaid?'filled the room as the girls all but tackled Serena, the golden haired girl laughing her head off. "Alright, alright, I'll explain!" Serena laughed. "But first we all need to get into our riding clothes. Once you're all dressed and read to go for a midnight ride, we'll meet in the stables, and I'll explain on the way to the lake." "The lake?" They all asked. Serena rolled her eyes. "Just *go!*" She cried, smiling, pushing Lita towards her dressing room with one and hand shooing out the rest of the girls with her other, herself included. Laughing as she entered her room, Serena immediately sensed that something was out of place. Her azure eyes swept the room in the pale moonlight, searching for something that didn't belong. She found it almost immediately on her pillow; A full, blood red rose, thornless, as the pointy atributes of the flower had been carefully snipped off. Smiling as she went to the bloom and lifted it to her nose, she saw a folded piece of parchment under it. Setting down the rose as she sat on her bed, she picked up the paper and saw that it was two. One was a letter, which she read quickly, discovering that the rose was from the prince, and she couldn't help but blush. The letter also said named the horses that they were to take, and informed her that the other paper was a map of the routes they were to take to get to the lake. Reading and rereading the letter, she burned it in her fireplace; there could be no evidence that she and the prince were getting along, that went without saying. The map she memorized quickly and thoroughly before folding it carefully and placing it on her nightstand. Quickly she dressed herself in black leggings, black sink blouse and silver tunic. Black boots with silver lacings, and white ribbons with a silver sheen were intertwined with her golden locks when she braided the long masses down her back, twisting it up around her head like a silver and gold crown. A black belt at her slim waist, sporting a small bag with a few medical herbs and a hunting knife completed the ensemble. She tucked the map into the pouch, and slipped silently out the door, the rose still on her pillow. As soon as she had closed the door quietly behind her, a slithering black shadow creeped off the walls and along the floor, over to the bed. It slid up over the sheets, around a pole, seeming to sniff the air, then crawled and slinked over the plush white coverlet to the single speck of red in the room; the rose. Lifting it with a transparent, shadowy black tendril, it brought the rose closer to it, as if it were smelling it. The evil creature recoiled from the sweet scent, tossing it back down to the pillow before letting loose a low, sinister hiss that was meant as a malicious laugh. *^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^* "Serena, what are we *doing?*" Raye hissed as she and the others each led one of the spare horses of the Guardian Generals of the Prince. "Just trust me." Serena whispered back as she motioned them over to a much more shadowed corner of the courtyard, near an unguarded gate. "Come on; mount up." Raye grumbled, and followed suit as Serena swung herself up into the saddle of a lovely gray mare, whose coat looked almost silver in the moonlight. Fittingly, she was named 'MoonBeam,' and her brother, 'NightShadow,' was the prince's main horse. "Say, Serena?" Mina whispered, quietly as she settled herself into the saddle of a light reddish brown, almost an orange stallion. "What?" "What *is* with that ring?" The petite blonde asked. "You did say you'd start explain on the way. Now how did you end up with the ring worn only by the official *Commander* of the People's Elite?" Serena sighed. "Let's just wait till we're in the woods; then I'll start talking, deal?" "Deal." The others murmured. Twenty minutes later found five girls mounted on fine steeds trampling as quietly as possible, with only moonlight to guide them and Serena's memory to give them directions. Without prodding, Serena told them how Shazal had cornered her, how the prince had 'come to her rescue' and of how he had apologized, and unoffically appointed her Commander of the People's elite. Amy, atop a black, newly broken in quarter horse, was delighted to know that the school was to be built within the next five years. "I can't believe it!" Raye whispered, her face a mask of utterly disbelief. "We did it! We actually did it! And...and we'll probably be the first mistresses for that new school, and Rena's gonna be one of the highest ranking officers on the planet! This is amazing!" "Yeah, totally," Lita's eyes were sparkling, her lips in a wide grin. "But there's bound to be *some* setbacks; all good things have them," the brunnette pointed out. "True," Serena ackowledged, leading them around a large tree. "We're going to explain things futher and work out the details at the lake." "'We?'" Mina echoed. "Who's 'we?'" "You'll see, Mina," Serena said, smiling miscieviously, her eyes twinkling. It took the small band of renegades, lead by Serena, to find their way to the edge of the woods, where the ground sloped down slightly to meet the indigo dark water of Crescent lake, the large, perfectly arched body of water that was the heart of the royal forests. Mina gasped, and everyone stiffened, going into defense positions the moment they spotted five other figures, rising from their sitting positons on the shore and walking towards them. "Oh, stop that," Serena sighed, and walked towards the group, her friends looking at each other with puzzled, but no less curious, looks before following. "My Prince," Serena murmured, bowing slightly, briefly, as part of her still felt a bit...uneasy doing this. Only yesterday she was treating him with scorn, and now she had to admit she held some respect for the man; he did know when he was wrong. "My lady," Darien bowed in turn, and the others nodded their heads. Serena stiffened, then relaxed as she suddenly felt Mina's cool hand on her forehead. Raye went to the prince and did the same. "Are...are you guys...feeling okay?" Mina asked hesitantly, running had hand over the sides of Serena's face. "They don't feel feverish," Raye commented. "No, but perhaps its a magical disease." Amy suggested. "Or it may be an elaborate joke," Lita suggested dryly. Serena looked at the prince, and together they burst out laughing. "Well, we didn't give them much reason to expect this," Serena reasoned. "True, very true; I was horrible to you." Darien said, his voice sudden series. "All of you. I hope you can forgive me. I was...blinded at the time that I made the bet, and afterwards when I realized I'd been stupid, my pride wouldn't let me do anything but go through with it." He sighed. "But, I'm afraid that that's not the only reason I've asked you here." The mood of the group of ten suddenly became more serious. "Things have been happening that only myself, my parents advisors, and my own advisors know about," Darien motioned to his guard. "Longs story short; the king and queen are out of commission." Mina and Amy gasped, Lita narrowed her eyes after blinking away her initial shock, as did Raye, her dark purple eyes flashing. Serena looked only mildly surprise, realization and understanding taking posession of her facial features. "That explains quite a bit," She said quietly. "That's what you meant by you could be dethroned." "Yes," Darien rubbed his brow tiredly. "In the absence of the King and Queen, usually the prince -if there is one and he's old enough- takes over, but, somehow the royal advisors managed to convince my parents otherwise. So until they return, or until my powers as crown prince are awakened, it is the advisors that reign over this kingdom. And yes, if they get mad enough, they can and will strip me of my title, taking away any chance of me turning around what they've done to the kingdom." "So all this time," Mina whispered. "We, all of the people, have been placing the blame on the royal family, when the fault lies with the advisors." "It's no surprise," Lita spoke up. They all looked at her. "Well, think about it," she said. "This way, they have total control, but if something happens that puts the royal family back in power, then there is a chance that the people will revolt, thinking that it was them that made them suffer all this time, and the advisors can claim to be the saints, and take control again." Darien nodded. "It's logical. And if my parents *don't* come back, then they can still use me and my descendants as puppets." His voice was low and filled with loathing. Kunzite chuckled. "Somehow I doubt *that* will ever happen," the lead General grinned. The other's nodded and smiled their agreement. "Alright, so you've apologized, explained your reasons for being a totall jerkasaurous, and what's really been going on," Raye said, hands crossed over her chest. "So I just have one more question." "Shoot for it, doll," Jedite winked at her, and she glared. "What I want to know is; why?" Raye cocked her head as the other girls expressions stated that they wished to know the same. "Why tell us all this?" "Because," the prince said slowly, a smile donning on his face. "Well, I'm sure Serena has already told you of her new, however unofficial, position as Commander of the People's Elite, correct?" "Correct," Amy confirmed. "Well, I don't know how much you know about the People's Elite, as they haven't been in action since my grandfather's reign, but under the Commander were four generals, or captains, and they commanded the four aspects of the people's elite. The court, the spies, the patrols, and the soldier units." He looked them each in the eye as he said each one. "And I would like you four to command those four branches." "US???" The girls screeched, and the Generals laughed. "Yes, you." The prince chuckled. "Friends?" He said to his Generals, and they each reached into their pockets. Kunzite stepped up to Mina, and handed her a black box. She opened it, and her eyes bulged as she took out the signet ring inside. It, too, bore the seal of the People's Elite, only with a few specific additions marking her as a General of the People's Elite, commander of the- "I hearby dub the lady Mina Aino as General of the People's Patrols, second in command of the entire People's Elite Leigon." Darien said, smiling. Mina was still gaping as Kunzite put the signet ring on her finger. Next, Jedite stepped up to Raye, and with a miscievious grin, knelt before her on one knee and held up the open ring box, marriage-proposal style. The girls giggled, and Raye glowered, snatching the ring out of the box. Looking at it, her eyes widened. "General of the People's Spies?" She breathed. She looked at Jedite, then at the prince with wide eyes. "I don't know what to say..." "That's a first," Serena muttered, and Raye elbowed her in the ribs, making Serena bend in half in mock pain. Laughing with everyone else, Nephlite presented Lita with her own signet ring, and she pumped a fist into the air when she saw that she'd been dubbed General of the People's Soldier Leigon. "Perfect for me!" She said, giving Nephlite a big hug and rendering the general a slight red. "And finally, Amy," Zoicite handed a blushing Amy yet another black box, and Amy's eyes widened and began to water when she saw that she'd been named the fourth General of the People's Courts. "This is wonderful!" She cried. And the others smiled. They knew how the unjust to the common folk was one of the few things that could get Amy steamed, and now, once the Royal Family was restored to its rightful place, she and the others could do something about it. About all of it. "You know, we were wrong about you," Lita said solomly to the Prince. "And I think I speak for all of us when I say that you have our apologies." The others nodded in agreement, and smiles blossomed on all of their faces. "Unfortunately," Kunzite said darkly, "That's not all." The girls, the new Kingdom Generals, looked at the leader of the Guardian Generals. "What do you mean?" Mina asked worridly. "He means that now that we're as high ranking as them, and now that we'll be working closely together they need to tell us about an evil so great its mind boggling, and how its coming right for us, and there's no one powerful enough to even think of standing up to it." Everyone, including the Prince and his Generals, turned to Serena as she spoke calmly, evenly, all in one breath, and with complete conviction. Her sapphire eyes, glinting in the moonlight, gazed stonily at the prince. "That's it, isn't it?" She told them, her tone saying that she knew it was true, whether they denyed it or not. The Prince sighed. "You may want to sit down," he said, and they all went and got blankets from their horses, then sat in a circle on the wet grass, their blankets under and around them. "Three days ago, the night of Lady Jasemine's ball, Generals Kunzite and Nephlite confirmed the suspicions that the Lady Beryl had been secretly and illegally tampering with illegal and eteranally forbidden forms of magic. Namely...The Nega Forces." The young women gasped and shrieked, Amy promptly fainting and falling to the damp ground before Zoicite could catch her, and he stood and went to her side, lifting her light form into his lap, brushing aside dark indigo bangs. Serena was the only one that remained perfectly unfazed, for even the Guardian Generals had shuddered. The golden haired woman narrowed her eyes as she fingerered her Silver Star Power Rod in her hands, under her blanket. So that was the name of the evil force that was coming their way, and Lady Beryl was one of them, perhaps even one of the ring leaders. Suddenly, an unnatural movement caught Serena's eye, over to the side. A silver gleem flashed momentarily over her vision, and she somehow knew that it meant danger was lurking. "Get up." She said stiffly, firmly to the others, as she herself rose slowly to her feet, her senses at their peek, wariness making her movements graceful and nimble. Slowly, puzzled, the others obeyed, rising to their feet as they stared at Serena. As they watched, a sheen that glimmered silver washed over her eyes. "Get away," She said quietly, in a monotone voice. The sense of lurking evil, of menacing danger was growing and growing rapidly. "Run...Get out of here, go!" "None of you are going *anywhere!*" A voice, a voice that was not a voice hissed, the sounds it was making that somehow formed words like darkness on the wind. A sinister, ugly shadow suddenly sprouted up from the center of the lake, the moonlight making it eerily visible, like a dark ghost. "Go! Run, *now!*" Serena screamed. She had to get them away so she could transform! She was the only one strong enough, the only one with power that was tuned specifically to fight the Nega Forces, as this shadow creature certainly was made of. "We're not leaving you!" Mina growled, taking up a defensive stance next to Serena. Serena grabbed her friends arm and whirled her around to look her in the eye. "I said *go!*" She hissed. "I have my reasons. I'll be fine, now get the others out of here!" "Not on your life, meatball brains," Raye agreed with Mina, as Serena released the blonde. "Get down!" Lita shoved all three of them to the dirt as the men ducked, Zoicite shielding Amy's still unconscious form with his own as the shadow creature surged forward, sending black electricity dancing from its dark, extended tenticles. All of them gritted their teeth to keep from screaming as the negative energy lanced through their nerves, sending bolts of pain dancing through their bodies. "What will it take for you guys to get the message that I *need* you guys to scram?" Serena raged. She grabbed a fist sized stone in her hand, leaping to her feet, and luged it at the shadowy form floating above them. The creature caught it, and charged it with black power, and threw it back like an electricity powered cannon. "Get *out!*" She cried. She could transform in front of them! That would put them in even more danger, with them knowing who she was! "Not a chance!" The shadow hissed loudly, and blackness lanced from it's body, surrounding them and the lake in a bubble of darkness, cutting them off from any escape. "You shouldn't have done that," Serena hissed lowly, her feet planted firmly on the ground, rage boiling inside of her. "And why not?" The shadow taunted. Serena looked up, and the others, who had all risen to their feet, Amy awake though rather dizzy, all gasped. Her eyes were living lightning, crackling silver with gold pupils. Golden, thrashing and wild whips of gold danced through the silver of her eyes. An invisible wind picked up, swirled around her like a minature wind storm at her command. The hurricane surrounding her picked up her long locks that had somehow come loose, whipping the masses of gold up and around her like vengeful lightning. "You shall pay," she said lowly, quietly, almost a whisper, and yet her voice was like thunder. "You had a chance as long as there was a possibility that my friends didn't have to see this, but in cutting off their escape, you cut off your own!" As she said his, she raised her hand, glowing asilver, threaded with hot pink, and called upon her power, newly harnessed to her will, and her will alone. "Silver Star Power: TRANSFORM!!!" Same as that first time in the tower, silver and white galaxies surrounded her, an invisible force lifting her into the air as she rotated like an expert ballet dancer. Within moments -in which everyone was froze, whether by shock or magic, no one knew- a silver, gold, and white clad warrior goddess stood tall and proud, her silver tresses bound up into an odd hairstyle, but one that fit her. In her hand was an arm length wand, which she placed her hand on the bottom of. Drawing her hand downward, the wand lengthened into a staff, the other gaping as they looked on. "So, my mistress was right," The shadow sneered. "You *are* the Ambassador of Moonlight, representative of the Lunar Princess, the only one with the power to stop us. In that case, I shall destroy you now, instead of wasting my time toying with you!" He shot along snake of blackness out towards her, quick as lightning. But quicker still was the newly dressed Serena, as she leaped away, landing gracefully atop a large boulder. Her Silver Star Staff in hand, she snarled up at the shadow, ignoring the wide eyed stares of her companions. "I am Sailor Silver Selene, Ambasador of the Moon Kingdom, Representative of the Lunar Princess." Sailor Silver Selene shouted. "I fight for peace and justice, and on behalf of the Moon, you shall pay for the terror you have caused, undoubtedly many times before. You shall suffer your fate at my hand!" To Be Continued... Hey, there! I thought I'd try a new approach to finding the other Sailors, instead of the time common, time consuming method of finding them one. By. One. So until next time, minna-chans!
