| We were discussing The King of Torts. Clay goes from skirting the lawyer's version of the poverty line to making a hundred million in one case. Mass torts seem like a dream come true. But dreams have a nasty way of becoming nightmares. Soon, while Clay is chasing one major firm after another, he starts running into the consequences of his actions. Because he settled a large firm into the ground, the firm went into bankrupcy and the town is dying, with thousands of lost jobs on his conscience. If that wasn't enough, a settlement he made earlier was a bad choice. The problem was more serious than anyone realized, and the amount of money Clay's "clients" got isn't enough to pay the doctor's dry-cleaning bill for his lab coats. And then Clay meets with a lawyer with a gigantic chip on her shoulder and one mission in life- to sue irresponsble mass tort lawyers. While she's suing him, some good 'ol boys from that town he ran int othe ground beat him into a pulp. But, the book ends on a happy note. Clay's fiance, who left him because he wasn't making enough money, finally grows a backbone and divorces the schmuck her parents convinced her to marry, and goes to the now-bankrupt Clay, who is in a hospital and very much beaten up. Ripley or Riley,- not sure what her name is- Clay's trophy girlfriend, leaves. As I write this, it is 3 am. I've been working for a while, hammering out these six pages in one sitting. I thank you for reading. If you made it this far, I can only conclude two things. One, you have too much time on your hands. Do something constructive. Two- if you don't have too much time on your hands, you're obviously interested in reading. If so, I hope this very lengthy write-up of one of my pet interests was of some use to you. I've skipped a lot of stuff, misc. books I read throughout my childhood and my high school years. You'll notice at the beginning of this series of pages, I only explained the gist of a series- and toward the end, I sort of got into plot summaries and such. Since you made it to the end, I'm hoping I've given you some ideas if you're looking for something to read. Now, I wouldn't recommend any Boxcar Children books, since I can finish one of those in ten minutes now, but S.E.Hinton's stuff is still good, even though it's aimed at teenagers. John Grisham has a new book coming out in January- The Broker- and I'm looking forward to it as a birthday present. |
