Ciao: The first foreign word I ever learned, although I didn't know how to pronnounce it at all. It's Italian for "See ya". Dela: Swahili, I think, for content. Enigma: a mystery, a puzzle, a conundrum. Can be used as the adjective "enigmatic". Entropy: a measure of chaos; the name of this website. Pusillanimous: to be so cowardly you are despised by others; to be French. This is one of the words I learned from my English 102 instructor. Salao: A Spanish word with no direct translation. It basically means "really, really, really unlucky". Shafted: To get the raw end of the deal, the short end of the stick. This is an actual expression.One definition I found was "to be skewered through the rear with a pole". I suppose you could call that the raw end of the deal.. Vamos: Spanish. It means "Let's GO!". Often used by me in driving, but usually in the direction of other drivers. Wallflower: one who doesn't do well at social situations such as dances. The name is derived, I think, from the fact that wallflowers tend to hang near the wall. My good friend I. Lostalim, however, says it's derived because all wallflowers do is stand around and look pretty. |
