Originally aired 22nd February 1988

Official Synopsis

Red Dwarf has been steadily accelerating for three million years and when it breaks the speed of light, time dilates and the new crew begin to experience visions from their own futures. Sadly for Lister his future appears to include being reduced to his component atoms by a rather large explosion. Happily for Rimmer, Listers future appears to include being reduced to his component atoms by a rather large explosion.

My Synopsis *Spoilers*

As Holly sends out a distress call, Lister tries to get the food dispensor, who has a lisp, to give him some decent food. Unfortunately, it mistakes his order for black coffee as a bucket. Meanwhile, Rimmer is doing his daily exercises, and managed to complete the 300m in 6 minutes and 47 seconds. He orders Holly to give him a clean uniform and a haircut. Holly, annoyed at being distracted from his preparations for moving at the speed of light, gives Rimmer a beehive hair cut.

While packing, Lister is showing Cat his photos on a slideshow. We see Jim-Bexley Speed, a zero-gravity footballer who is Lister's idol, Lister's grandmother, and Lister's dad's dog, Hannah. Cat, who has never seen a dog, announces that, if that thing came on board, he'd have to chase it. He leaves the room very nervously. Lister, noticing that one of his fish has 'died', takes it out of the tank and bangs it on the table a few times, before opening it with a screwdriver and fixing it. Rimmer enters with his ridiculous haircut, still unaware that it isn't the short cut he asked for. Lister and Cat enlighten him on the subject, but Holly still refuses to change it back. Lister says he's packing because the Cat and himself are going into stasis - originally just while they're going at light speed, but he thinks they might as well stay in for 3 million years, until they get back to earth.

Rimmer doesn't want to be left alone for 3 million years while the other two are in stasis, and is told that he'll be turned off for the duration of the trip back to earth. But Rimmer doesn't believe they'll turn him on again when they get back, and has a go at Lister for still being alive. They break the light barrier with a bang, 22 hours early. Lister is shaving in his room, when he realises that the mirror isn't doing the same thing as he is. He calls Rimmer into the room, but things are now back to normal, and they both forget about it. On his way to stasis, the Cat wants to take eleven racks of clothes. After telling him he can't, Lister sets off to find Rimmer.

When Rimmer enters the room, he doesn't appear to notice Lister, and has a conversation with mid-air. When he leaves, Rimmer comes in again - and says the same things over again, but this time they make sense because Lister is having a different conversation, asking Rimmer how he did that. As Lister tries to make Rimmer believe that he'd seen two Rimmers, the Cat rushes past, yelling about his broken tooth. The two ignore him, and continue to their room, where Cat is, fishing for Lister's fish. Totally confused now, they ask Holly what's going on, who tells them that, since they're travelling at the speed of light, they are catching up with things that they're about to do before they actually happen. They see a photograph on the bed, and conclude that it is a future echo - it shows a grinning Lister holding two baby boys.

The skutters hand Lister a piece of paper telling him how they don't want to be left alone with Rimmer - and then there is a huge explosion. Lister runs to the drive room, where a panicked Rimmer tells Lister that he just saw him die as he was fixing navicomp. Rimmer takes great delight in telling Lister that he looked about the same age as he was now, and there wasn't too much agony, if you don't count the thrashing around. Lister, on learning that Rimmer saw him wearing a hat, takes off his hat and announces that he'll never wear it again. He thinks for a minute, and decides that if he can stop the Cat breaking his tooth, he can stop himself dying. Holly tells them that the Cat just went into their sleeping quarters. Lister and Rimmer rush off to find him. They think that Cat will break his tooth trying to eat Lister's robotic goldfish.

By the time Lister gets there, Cat has fished out the goldfish, put it between two slices of bread and is about to take a bite. Lister wrestles Cat to the ground and saves the goldfish from being bitten - unfortunately, he breaks Cat's tooth in the process. Cat runs out of the room yelling about his tooth, while Holly tells them there's a problem with the navicomp. Lister decides that he can't stop fate and he might as well go for it. He replaces his hat and strides to the drive room to fix it. The navicomp is showering sparks everywhere, and Lister flicks the switches closing his eyes - but nothing happens.

Lister is ecstatic that he's still alive. Rimmer still thinks it'll happen someday. As they go into the sleeping quarters, they see Lister aged 171 sitting on the bed. He tells them that Rimmer saw Bexley, Lister's second son, die in the drive room, not Lister. He then tells Lister to go to the medical centre with a camera. Rimmer asks the old Lister what happens to him, but he just laughs and disappears. Lister and Rimmer run down to the medical centre, and a Lister from the past exits, holding two boys - Jim and Bexley. Lister snaps the picture.
