Series 1: Balance of Power

Originally aired 29th February 1988

Official Synopsis

Lister wants to go on a date with the hologram of his old flame, navigation officer Kristine Kochanski, but it would mean replacing Rimmer as the ship hologram, which of course Rimmer won't let happen. Lister decides to do a cooking exam so he can become a chef, and if he passes he will hold sufficient rank to order this. Just how low will the universe's most obnoxious dead man stoop to stop him?

My Synopsis *Spoilers*

As Holly sends out a distress call, Rimmer and Lister are recording what stock they have on board; which means Rimmer reads out what they have, and Lister says "check". After four hours, Lister decides he's bored, and asks for his cigarettes. It appears Rimmer has stolen them and is giving him one cigarette per day he obeys him. Lister is given his four and 3/4 of a cigarette and leaves the room, leaving Rimmer very smug. Lister asks Holly why he brought back Rimmer, and it is because he was the person Lister knew best: he had over 14 million words shared with Rimmer, compared to a tiny 173 words with Kochanski. Depressed, Lister goes to sit alone in the mess hall, with a drink.

His thoughts drift into the past, when there was a party there. Lister is playing games with his friends, Peterson, Selby and Chen. They start teasing Lister that he has a 'thing' for Kochanski, which he denies. Rimmer comes up and asks them where his revision timetable is, and Lister first tells him he threw it away, before admitting that he spilled cold vindaloo on it. Rimmer storms off, annoyed and reciting the conversation they just had, because he'd taken learning drugs to help him cheat in the exam. Once more Lister's friends begin teasing him about Kochanski, and the memory disappears.

As Rimmer is walking through the corridor, he spots Cat wheeling a trolley of Lister's cigarettes. Nervously, he asks Cat to put them back before Lister sees them, but he refuses, saying they're his. Rimmer eventually convinces him by promising to let him have all the fish he wants. He then goes to the sleeping quarters, where Lister is playing along (badly) to Rastabilly-Ska, music with a government health warning on the CD. They settles down to sleep, and Lister asks Rimmer if he can spend four hours with Kochanski's hologram. Rimmer refuses to tell Lister where he's hidden the hologram disks. Lister, annoyed, tells Rimmer he's going to pass the exams to gain a higher rank than Rimmer - then he'll have to give him Kochanski and his cigarettes. In the morning Rimmer wakes up and Lister isn't in his bunk.

After insulting Holly, Rimmer finds that his arm starts to attack him, and it only stops when he tells Holly how nice he looks. He then wanders around the ship, trying to find Lister. He looks in the cinema, but there are just two skutters who are 'cleaning up'. He eventually finds Lister in one of the teaching rooms, watching a training video. It turns out Lister doesn't want to pass the officer's exam - he's going to pass the chef's exam, because it still outranks Rimmer. He's using learning drugs, but Rimmer can't do anything because Lister found them in his locker.

Later, Rimmer is in his room, trying to complete some questions for the officer's exam, but failing. Lister arrives bearing a cake, but admits that it's actually supposed to be roast beef. Rimmer tries to convince him that they're pals, and there's no point in all this rivalry. Lister sees right through him, and tells him no. The next day, Holly tells all entries for the chef exam to make their way to the teaching room. Lister misses the first minute of the exam by eating a bun. Once finished, he sets off to the exam. Half way through, Kochanski walks through the door. Lister is surprised, especially when she tells him that she doesn't really like him. He gets suspicious, and asks her if she remembers the time they made love underneath the snooker table. When she says yes, he knows it's Rimmer - he never made love to her. Rimmer goes out - still with one of Kochanski's breasts.

Lister comes out of the exam to collect his results, and doesn't tell Rimmer what they are. He starts walking off, but then jumps around - he passed!
