Cicadas are strange little creatures. They look like a prawn and live in the ground for seven years (so I learnt at school many years ago) - when the time is right they crawl out of the ground and up a tree where they shed their prawn like skin for wings - fly away - mate - some females lay eggs in dead sticks others in green wood - when the eggs hatch the nymphs drop to the ground - they dig into the tree roots and live on the sap - they moult 3 or 4 times.
The male of the species has a shrill call somewhat like a very loud cricket - during summer at the height of breeding season with hundreds of males calling females at the same time the noise can be deafening.
The photographs are of a Green grocer - cicadas come in several colours - black prince - yellow mondays - floury baker - cherry nose and probably many more I have not s |
