A BRIEF HISTORY OF ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential Oils are extracts from plants. The easiest way to think about essential oils is that they are the essence of the plant.  It is these oils that make plants smell like they do, taste as they do, and sometimes look like they do.

The use of essential oils dates well into the BC era, making them one of the oldest components of holistic healing. They were used by ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Greeks, and Romans. The use of essential oils declined during the dark ages of Europena history, however, monastaries continued to use the oils for medical purposes. During the middle ages, essential oils came back into 'fashion' when many of their infection-fighting properties were discovered during the black plague that swept through Europe.

Most essential oils used during this era of rediscovery were created from plants obtained mainly from Asian countries. As Europeans explored more of the world, they discovered more unknown plants. South & North American Natives introduced an abundance of new plants to the Europeans.

Scientific experiments began on essential oils and their properties in the beginning of the 19th century.

Still much is unknown about the properties of these oils and more is being discovered every year. However, with the reduction in forests and grassy plains (most notably the rain forests), the properties of many plants will forever remain a mystery.

What Are Essential Oils Used For?
Believe it or not, you encounter Essential Oils everyday, perhaps without ever realizing it. Some sodas contain essential oils. Cosmetic companies use these oils in abundance; perfumes, deodorant, hair products, makeup, skin care products, incense, cleaning products.....the list goes on and on.

A large market for essential oils is for Aromatherapy and holistic healing. These practices are built upon the knowledge of how oils interact with the human body. How does smelling an orange first thing in the morning make you feel? What about bathing in a Lavender scented bubble bath?

This is not to say that all Essential Oils have uses, or particularly pleasant uses. Some oils are POISONOUS and extreme care should always be taken in dealing with essential oils. Please keep some things in mind when dealing with essential oils:

1. ALWAYS research oils you intend to use. Fragrance oils are NOT essential oils.

2. KEEP all oils away from children and animals. Unless the oils is specified as FOOD GRADE, it should NOT be taken internally.

3. PROTECT your skin and eyes from undiluted oils. ALWAYS keep in mind possible allergies/allergic reactions- even if you have never shown a sensitivity before, they can pop up at any time!

4. BUY oils from senders/vendors with good reputations. Altered essential oils can diminsh the properties of the oils, as well as be ultimately harmful to oil users.
