Dale Peters and Jim Fox were obviously trying
for a success after the departure of Mr. Walsh.
Not too far away, the successful Canadian band
"Bush" (1970) had splintered, with ex-members
Prakash John and Whitey Glan moving to Lou
Reed's camp to write and record the
Transformer album. Dale and Jim partnered with
ex-Bush members Domenic Troiano and Roy Kenner
to record the lukewarm Straight Shooter album.
Shortly after, Domenic returned to Canada (due
to contractual obligations), and newcomer Tommy
Bolin was added on guitar. It was not so much a
case of expert TB "rushing in to save a
floundering band" as it was a case of a band
searching for a new identity. Tommy fit in very
well, and during this period wrote some of his
solo ideas for later projects. It's also worth
noting that Mr. Kenner coached Mr. Bolin's
vocals (not the converse), and the two enjoyed
singing together; especially acapella. Mr.
Bolin had not done much studio vocal work up to
this point. It's worth noting that Roy Kenner
is the vocalist on "Mystery".
Although both albums ("Bang" and "Miami") and
tours were well received, tensions were
beginning to build up in the band. Many
concert-goers still expected to see the
original band with Joe Walsh, and had no
interest in the new faces or material. On
the James Gang - Bang album you will find a
diverse collection of material and a fresh
purpose. Tommy Bolin's guitar work is masterful,
original and imaginative. Many of his toolkit
tricks and trademarks were created during
these sessions, and this album comes highly
recommended to any of his true fans.
