General:
Most people hate E40, and most people completely suck at E40, and I
suppose
those two facts
are highly correlated. This is the only bonus stage which hasnt been
"perfected", and it is still a
mystery if something special happens if you manage to get all 50
bananas.
Basically there was
an interview with the creator of SMB in which he was talking about 130
levels in this game, but
there are only 118 know ones. Personally I think nothing happens when
you
get 5000, because
nothing happens when you get 9999 Play Points, which is a more
important
challenge than
getting 50 bananas on a bonus stage. Anyway, I somehow own this level
(and
like this level),
and Ive had 2 4700s as well as several 4600s, 4500s and lower. I think
the
only reason people
have such low score here is that they dont know a good strat, but
thats
what Im trying to
provide here.
Notation: There are 5 rows and 10 columns, I will label the rows A
through E
from front to back,
and the cloumns 1 to 10 from left to right.
I want a consistent finish!
Yeah...
I want a good score!
Well well, 4000 is your goal, and what a cake score this is. You want
to
follow the WR strat, and
you should get it without troubles.
I want the record!
Boost right, go down left and get the 5 bananas from columns 10. Reduce
speed (pull back or
back left or something) and get all bananas from the front row, row A.
Now
you go off the ramp,
reduce speed, and get 3 of the remaining 4 bananas from column 1 (I
sometimes pick up all
bananas from column 1 during the jump, but rarely). You now have 17
bananas,
and you should
be able to get to this point with 17 bananas about 80-90% of the time.
You
are behind the
bananas as you land.
Now comes the important part. When you land you have to hold forward
and get
the bananas
from column 2. What you want to do is this: Hold forward, get column 2,
and
ideally you will get
exactly to row B, move over to right and pick up as many bananas from
row B
as you can. This is
the hardest part of the strat. Often you will be too slow after the
jump and
you will not even
reach row B. Often you will be too fast, and you will move past row B
if you
just hold forward. If
either of the 2 happens, restart. Beware: You are not allowed to reduce
speed if you are too
fast! If you reduce speed if youre too fast, you will fall behind the
bananas and a good score is
impossible.
Anyway, as you reach the east end of row B, you will start to lose speed
relative to the bananas.
Move left, and you will hopefully get some of the right bananas of row
C,
followed by some of the
left bananas of row D. Remeber, you never reduce speed. You are now at
the
back-left corner of
the bananas, and you can pick up the single banana from column 1 you
missed
during the jump.
At this point, your speed is exactly the same as the banana speed. Move
over
to the right and
get most or all remaining bananas of row E. Now you are a bit faster
than
the bananas, and you
can move left again to get the right bananas from row D and the left
bananas
from row C.
To recapitulate a bit, you pick up the rows in the following manner:
Row A
before the jump, all at
once. Row B as the first row after the jump, all at once. Half of C and
half
of D while moving
backwards relative to the bananas. Row E after that, all at once. The
remaining bananas from D
and C while moving forward relative to the bananas. All of this may
sound
hard, but its easy,
just try it and dont give up.
