Irony
Back To Homepage
Let me define irony for those of us who didn't already know what it meant.  Dictionary.com says that irony is "The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning."  There is a song entitled 'Irony' in which no phrase used in it to convey irony is in fact ironic, but mearly unfortunate.  For example, rain on ones wedding day is not ironic, it is just unfortunate.  And not heeding good advice is also not ironic, unless the advice itself was "You'd better listen to this advice" in which case it would be ironic.  In fact, the only thing that is even midly ironic in the entirety of the song is that fact that it is entitled 'Irony' when in fact nothing in the song is ironic.  Alanis, with all that money you've accumulated from record sales, why don't you go buy a dictionary.
