| Queensday 30 April | ||||||||||||||||||
| Koninginnedag (as we call it) is the day on which our Queen's birthday is celebrated. It is the one day of the year when people go crazy, wild & insane. Normally the Dutch are pretty quiet, calm & low profile, but on this day everyone feels like going beserk. It's also the one day when you can sell things in the streets. So the city changes into one big party and garage sale. People empty their cellars and attics and try to sell all that old stuff and clutter they've been keeping for years: furniture, books, shoes, clothes, grandma's slipper collection, auntie Marie's ugly heirloom lamp, records, tv's, rugs, t-shirts, china, toys, etc. etc. |

| Another very popular item is anything in the colour orange. Pins, little crowns, little flags, t-shirts, face paint. Anything you can put on or on your clothes, hair & face. Lots of people go into a creative mode and make little orange things themselves. Then of course there are also performances everywhere. Well known bands and unknown bands compete for attention. Children are playing the two or three songs they've learned on their violin, recorder or harmonica. It's one big party. The best day of the year. |
