The Bio

Brendan Fredrick Shanahan was born in Mimico, Ontario to Irish immigrant parents. He is the youngest of the four boys in the family. As a young boy, Brendan played both lacrosse as well as hockey. At one point, he was hoping that he could have a pro career in lacrosse because he considered him a better player in that sport. Fortunately for hockey fans, Brendan stuck with hockey.

Brendan currently resides in Birminghamm, Michigan. Off the ice, he is a big film buff. He even memorizes the lines when he's bored. So if someone were to make a movie about the Red Wings, what actor would Brendan want to play him? None other than Mr. "Big" himself, Tom Hanks. He thinks his life is a bit dull, so he makes up fibs to spice up his personal life when interviewed for team bios. Shanny claims he has played professional soccer, ran with the bulls in Spain, and even had a small role in the movie Forrest Gump. But what else would you expect from a guy with the initials B.S.? Truthfully, he has picked up the game of chess and brings his chess set when the Red Wings are on the road. Teammate Igor Larionov has nicknamed Shanny the "Canadian Grand Master", with Larionov being the Russian counterpart. Aside from playing chess, Brendan really enjoys, would you believe, doing the laundary?

Brendan is one of the most quotable guys in professional sports, which is why he's so popular with the media. During his appearance on the Tonight Show, Jay Leno asked Brendan about his teeth, Shanny promptly answered, "Yeah, I�ve got teeth. They�re not mine, but I've got them." When reporters questioned his ability to play after getting 15 stitches on his face right before the Nagano Olympics, Shanny said, "I'm going, I just don't know how much sushi I'll be eating".
