| Rookie Season Kariya was voted a finalist for the 1994-95 Calder Memorial Trophy for outstanding NHL rookie. He set a Mighty Ducks record for rookie points in one season in 1994-95 leading the Mighty Ducks in scoring {39}, goals {18}, shots {134}, power play goals {7} and games played {47}. He CO-led the team in assists {21}, shorthanded goals {1} and game tying goals {1}. Ranked in the top two of nine different rookie categories, including scoring {2nd}, goals {1st}, assists {2nd}, power play goals {2nd}, power play assists {2nd}, power play points {tied for 2nd}, game tying goals {Tied for 1st}, game winning goals {tied for 1st} and shots {1st}. He had a six-game-multiple-point streak {mar. 9-21, 1995, 6-6=12} a club record. General Kariya began his NHL career hot, scoring in five of his first seven games {4-3=7}. He signed a multi-year contract with Anaheim on {Sept. 1, 1994}. He was Anaheim's first Draft pick. He played most of 1993-94 with Team Canada, preparing for the 1994 Olympic Games as well as playing in them. While with team Canada he played in 31 games while scoring 10-38=48 points, he scored 3-4=7 points in eight Olympic contests, which led Team Canada. He scored the game-winning goal in overtime Vs. the Czech Republic to help Canada advance to the Olympic Semifinals Vs. Finland. He centered the line of Petr Nedved and Chris Kontos, as Canada won the Silver medal at the Olympics. He also played for Canada at the World Championships, leading the team in scoring with 5-7=12 points in eight games as they captured the gold medal. He was second only to Sweden's Mats Sundin in overall scorer's in the tournament. He had a hat trick in Canada's 6-1 win over Austria on April 26, 1994. Paul was named the top forward in the tournament as well as making the all-star team at left-wing. He played the first 12 games of the 93-94 season for the University of Maine, scoring 8-16=24 points. He ranked fourth among all-time Maine leading scorer's with 33-91=124 points in on 51 NCAA contests. He became the first Freshman to ever win the Hobey Baker Award for top U.S College player in 1992-93 with the Black Bears. He was also named 1993 Hockey East Player of the year and 1993 Hockey East Rookie of the year - the first person to win both honors in the same season since Brian Leetch {1986-87}. He was named to the 1993 All-Hockey East First Team and named Hockey East Rookie of the month for Noc., Dec. and Feb. He set a Main single-season record for assists with 75 and points with 100. He led the Hockey east Conference scoring with 15-48=63 points He also had the Hockey east freshman record fo assists {48{ and points {63} in conference play, including scoring at least a pin in all 24 league games, setting a hockey east record for longest conference scoring streak at 24 games. He also had a Maine record 31-game scoring streak. Paul had 30 multiple-point games in 1992-93 including a 1-5=6 point game in an 11-2 win over Northeastern on Dec. 5, 1992. He won the 1992-93 NCAA national championship game to lead Main from a 4-2 deficit to a 5-4 win over Lake Superior State. He played in the Great Alaska face-off Tournament in November, 1992 and was named MVP with 3-3=6 points. A 1993 Hockey East all-academic selection. He played for team Canada at the world senior championships in Munich, Germany in April and May 1993. He was a member of Canada's Goal medal winning team at the 1992-93 World Junior Championships in Gavle, Sweden. Paul was the Canadian Junior A player of the year in 1992, scoring 46-86=132 points in 40 games {3.3 points per-game avg.}. He was a two-time British Columbia Junior Hockey League Most Valuable Player and twice awarded the Most Sportsmanlike Award after compiling eight penalty minutes in 1990-92 and 16 the following year. |
