watch and watch
still and hidden one
silent dreaming one
sees the secret
in-between things
stick arms, legs, long breakable neck all gather up
into a bundle a shadow into nearly nothing, white forehead, big
big dark dark eyes perceive, follow
wondrous creatures
that skitter through the spaces in between the people
gathered here today
and leap over the tabletops barely brushing bouquets, flash
along the mahogany bar and out
into the grand foyer with green and black tiled floor
and up strange spiral staircases
which lead to locked doors.
the little girl
leans against the doors, sees dust flowing through the cracks, leans
her head against the door,
rests; gazes out at
across
from a bundle, a shadow, a corner, nothing.
