SHATTERED
DREAMS
“They say you
should be careful what you wish for…”
As he ripped
out the sheet of paper from the typewriter, he looked in despair at the pile of
crumpled up pages he had managed to waste. He had been in search for the
perfect story since the past three years, but it was almost as if every time he
got any where near it, it just slipped away right in front of his eyes. Just
like she had!

“Somebody is looking lovely today.”
“Thanks!” She
said with a blush.
“Who was
talking about you, I was referring to that lovely lady in yellow there!”
And with this
another lovely day started at their college. He was handsome and smart, she was
lovely and funny. It was one of those textbook couples. But some books are not
that fun once you read the ending. Their case was no different!

Three years ago
it had all started with a huge bang. They had both managed to fall into enough
trouble to end up getting almost kicked out. With lots of warnings and failures
in their lives, the two of them joined hands in a venture that was totally
different now. The two underdogs of the class suddenly became one of the best
teams in the class. And the good days had begun!
But nothing
lasts forever. Or at least good times do not. As she happily told him about her
future husband, the reality hit him hard. Without realizing it, he had fallen
in love with her. As he smiled, maybe at his own miseries, she described how
they had met, how the parents had arranged everything, and how the preparations
were going. But she was happy. That’s all that mattered. And that’s exactly why
he decided to let it go, for her happiness.
As days passed
by, she moved away and away. After all, she was married now. As he completed
his studies, the memories of her helped him become a great playwright. His
tragic comedies brought a revolution to the usual happy ending trend of those
times. And it was then when he had written the perfect ending to his tale. A
tale in which there was a happy ending. A lovely tale!

He was just
bent upon his old memories when the phone rang. He almost dropped his cell at
the familiarity of the voice. It was she of course! She had news for him. She
had left her husband, but the reason she told him was enough to make him
squeal! Her husband had found some of their old reminiscences, and had started
mistrusting her. The tensions rose, and one day she had had it. She was going
to do exactly what he suspected of her. She was going to get back together with
him!
Was it all too
good to believe or was he dreaming? Whatever it was, he had her landing timings
already jotted down on a piece of paper. The two days left seemed not just
forty-eight hours; they were forty-eight centuries, and each century consisting
of a billion years. But the wait was totally worth it. He was finally about to
achieve what he had always wished for. It may have come a little later than he
would have wished, but better late than never was all he had on his mind!

“What?????”
“I am sorry…
please try to understand…”
“But what about
all that mistrust and…”
“I love him… I
can’t live without him… it was all a mistake… he called last night… and I
guess…”
“Yeah… you
guess you can play like fools!!!”
“Come on!!! We
are still married!!!”
“But you are
MINE!!!!!”
“I am sorry… I
am really sorry… it’s just not to be…”
“After all
those years of wait… and when I finally…”
“I said sorry…
ok??? I don’t want to push further… I
just came to say good bye!”
“Yeah… leave …
just leave… leave me like u did before… leave me like…”
She could not
really hear what he was saying as she slammed shut his doors. She genuinely
felt sorry for him, but she kept on fighting the guilt. He gets so wild in
situations like this. What she did not realize was that it was only in
situations like this that he got wild. Otherwise he was the most caring and
sweet person alive. Situations like this, where she would utterly despair him
of all his hopes concerning her.

Amidst his
anguish to write the perfect tale, he had somehow managed to only write the
truth. A tale totally his own, a tale totally true. As he posted the tale to
the editor, he smiled to himself. He may not have her in his life, but she
shall always be with him, in his heart.
