Arlak grins when he sees Allory and says, "All chairs inspected for you, Master Allory. No problems, glue, or missing parts...."

Arlak blinks when he sees Allory's expression and asks, "I didn't do whatever upset you....I've not pranked anyone in a while now!

Jorj stands when he sees everyone else stand, and echoes, "Good evening, MasterSmith!"

Argothe glances sidelong at Arlak and raises his eyebrows.

Oshay see's the MAster's face, and stays quiet...

G'har shuts the door tightly behind him as he walks into the lounge.

G'har pauses just inside the entrance to the lounge, and steps to one side. His "Ista's duty to the Smithcraft" is very quiet.

Oshay quietly sist down again, giving the Master room and time to think.....

Allory waves her hand absently to Arlak, swirling upon G'har, "Well at least they havent managed to kill you yet."

Jorj says "Er, Craft Second, I mean."

Jorj winces at Allory's comment to the Rider. Rider? He stands again.

G'har's grimace is visible. "Master... nobody -killed- anybody. It was just an accident." His voice is still very quiet, and holds honest regret.

Chandor chuckles quietly at Jorj, sure way to tell new apprentices.

Loren sits back on the old leather couch, which creaks alarmingly at the unaccustomed load!

Oshay smiles and nods a greeting to G'har....but with the room so full and the Master seemingly upset, she leaves the proper, official greeting off till later....

Allory turns away from G'har, heading for the klah pot, "Theres accidents and then there's /accidents.f"

Argothe sits back down, carefuly,, and chews down some klah.

Jorj blink-blinks. "Who died?" he asks, naievely.

[OOC] Arlak notes that the pot is fresh brewed, Arlak can't stand the normal stuff around here ;)

Oshay blinks and look worried, raising an eyebrow. Accidents!?

G'har's gaze briefly finds his shoes, and then he looks up, blinking as he realizes that, yes, there are other Smiths besides Allory in the lounge. "Journeyman Silane," he tells Jorj. "And it was an -accident-." And, like Allory, he does emphasize that last word.

Jorj mouths the name `Silane', as if tasting it. "I didn't know him." Like he knew anyone.

Annik emerges from the SmithCraft Tent.

Oshay sits quiet, and waits to hear more...

G'har just smiles at Jorj, though the expression is more like a grimace, and remains where he is, near the door. He doesn't look like he's going to tell any more, but his expression suggests that he, at least, knew Silane.

Allory peers at the liquid klah in her mug, "What in Faranth's toenail goop is this coloured water doing in the klah pot?"

Loren sips his stout and watches with interest.

Annik comes in a sees lots of Smiths! Where did they all come from?

Arlak looks at Allory and says, "It's GOOD klah for a change, Master Allory. I thought that the others around here might appreciate some."

Jorj moves back until his back touches the wall. He has a dubious look which crosses his face at odd intervals, as if he is contemplating a Whole New World of SmithCrafting which hadn't occurred to him existed before.

Allory fixes Arlak with a /look/, "My klah _is_ good."

Oshay grins..

G'har notes quietly, from his spot by the exit, "Chewy klah is a good thing."

Loren mutters to Oshay.

Arlak smiles and says, "Well, you may prefer it that way, but most people prefer their klah to be a drink, not a food."

Oshay flashes a grin at Loren, but says nothing....

Jorj tries to help, especially since this subject seems safer than Silane's fate. "You can use it to seal roofing."

Arlak is obviously trying to hold back a grin, not completely successfully, but isn't going to back down over the issue of klah.

Allory pauses for a moment, just watching Arlak, her expression not becoming any more amused as the moments pass, finally she carefully hands the mug to Arlak, "Brew me some proper klah, Apprentice." she turns back to G'har, "You may tell your weyrwoman that Smithcraft has withdrawn it's support of Ista, until such time as it can prove that it provdes safe working conditions for my smiths."

Jorj's eyes widen.

Chandor gets a very solemn expression all of a suddne.

G'har blinks several times, his jaw dropping. "Withdrawn its... but -Master-, it was an accident. You haven't even sent a representative to determine what Silane did!"

Arlak goes to the entrance to the kitchen and calls to the people there, "We need a pot of sludge klah!"

Argothe sits /very/ quietly with a stunned expression on his face and his mug halfway to his mouth.

Oshay looses her grin immediatly. She asks, quietly..."What happened?"

Loren sits still watching Allory intently.

Arlak blinks as he hears this, the grin fadeing immediately.

Annik hears serious words and turns to looks at Allory and G'har, her attention focused on the conversation.

Allory seems firm, "I have my reports and I know Silane. I will be recalling Tanon as soon as possible." she turns back to the klah pot, having utterly forgotten that she's ordered it rebrowed and picks up a mug, her hands shaking.

Oshay rises, quietly, and moves to Allory...."Perhaps you'd like to sit down Master", she says gently..."I can fix you a mug."

Annik looks confused. She missed something...

Jorj looks worse than confused. He looks...homesick.

G'har, still looking utterly floored, stares at Allory's back for a long moment. "Withdrawn support," he murmurs, mostly to himself. "Faranth's gleaming gonads."

Chandor can't remember the last time a craft did withdraw support.

Allory sits in a chair, holding her mug of Arlak's klah in her hand before taking a sip and making a face, "Ugh." she nods to Jorj, "We will be having a memorial service as soon as I can arrange it."

Oshay sits back down, in her original seat...

G'har shakes his head slowly at the mention of remains, though he doesn't actually say whatever it is he's thinking, instead murmuring something about heat.

Jorj says "If it's needed, I can drum, a little. I've done this before." Jorj sits down, now, near the wall,

Allory takes a deep breath, "This discussion is closed for the time being."

Allory goes OOC to get this meeting started such that we can all actually get some sleep this evening.

Annik says "Wait! I was just gonna do a pose..."

The OOC lamp is lit, I repeat the OOC lamp is lit!

Jorj curls up in Oshay's lap, purring.

Loren changes into his footie jammies.

G'har, now that we're OOC, smooches Allory. :)

Oshay looks down as Jorj attempts something, but her lap is already occupied. By part of her fair....

Allory smooches G'har in return, "Alright, first and foremost, thank you everyone for coming! This is the best turnout I've ever seen for a smithcraft meeting."

Loren pulls out a bag of fresh popped buttered popcorn. "On with the show!"

Allory chuckles, "Alright, so this is the first time we've actually had anyone other than me at a smithcraft meeting. Thank you everyone for all the support you've all offered to drag the craft back out of the pit of doom we've been in for far far too long, it gives me much hope for the future."

Oshay says "I am happy to see such activity too. UIt's been a while."

Arlak chuckles and nods

Loren nods, "All my ICly life here."

Annik looks around at her consipirators...uh... fellow appies. "We would let the hall stay in the pit."

Oshay says "Thank you for being willing to take on such a big job. You've done it once and could rightfully say you'd done your share. But you didn't. We appreciate that."

Allory continues, "Now, as most of you may already know, I have spoken with the craft council about replacing Tanghos as Craftmaster. One of the requirements for being an IC leader on PernMUSH is to be active, and to that end, any leader who as been idle for more than a month can be replaced. Thos last logged in on Aug 1, he's coming up to 2 months idle at this point."

Loren snorts, "I think less than 4 hours in four months qualifies as idling!"

Chandor agrees to Loren.

Oshay agrees.

Allory says "The craft Council then goes to the wizards and between the council and the wizards and the junior leaders at the Hall, they decide on the new Craftmaster. Currently we are just waiting on wizard approval of myself as the next Craftmaster. Ideally that should come soon.""

Annik agrees with Chandor, Oshay, and Loren.

Oshay says "The sooner the better."

Arlak nods

Chandor nods "This craft has been lead too often in it's past by C2's and less."

Loren smiles, "I can't see any opposition, Al."

G'har dittoes Loren.

Annik nods, "Until a RL month or so ago, I was a lone appy wandering around an empty hall..."

Oshay has not seen any other Smith's, except Norgan once a couple of weeks ago, for longer than that.

Loren sniffs, well maybe it was bad timing and being elsewhere on Pern.

Allory takes a breath, "Until that time, I am acting Craftmaster, kind of that no man's land between CraftSecond and Craftmaster. As everyone knows, we have no active jouneymen or masters, so as soon as I dont feel like I'm treading on too many toes, there'll probably be some pretty heavy rank shifting."

Annik thinks Allory's /always/ been acting CM.

Arlak nods. Well, between fall semester, and those who were semi-active deciding to come back to the hall, things are looking great around here.

Chandor says "I suggested something a bit different about an year ago to Thos, I might be better than insta-promotions."

Oshay says "I don't see anyone here whose toes feel tread upon. But I guess the CraftCouncil might be bothered? Why, I have no idea. I figure...do what you have to do."

Argothe nods to Allory, "Whatever is good for the hall if fine with me..:)"

Allory keeps on typing, "I will be taking applications for craftSecond and Apprentice Master. This is not typical, they are usually assigned positions out of available masters, but in the current situation, I feel it would be more prudent to accept applications. This means, that someone who has been here less RL time than you, may outrank you in the near future. Are there any major objections to that? Page me if you'd prefer not to say so publicly."

Allory pauses to catch up on reading, "What did you suggest Chandor?"

Chandor says "No objections, I'll explain my suggestion and the reasoning behind it :"

Oshay figures that Allory will do well, and will back whatever Allory wants to do. No problems here.

Arlak says "Only if it's someone who's been here a VERY short ammount of time."

Loren shakes his head, "None here, I came here to be a smith."

Arlak says "people who apprenticed within the past month shouldn't get that position."

Allory nods to Arlak, "I'll keep that in mind."

Chandor says "To get the craft up and running, it's eminently obvious we need about three to five more Masters and about ten JM's in the near future"

Oshay says "On the other hand, an apparently new Smith *could* be an alt for a far more experience player, whose been around alot longer. How would we know?"

Oshay says "Just mentioning the posibiliy."

Chandor says "Also I think that the situation regarding promotion guidelines has gotten already far enough out of hand so that insta-promotions of existing players would be more a danger to the stability of the craft than a reasonable cure."

Oshay says "Sorry. Got booted."

Chandor says "My suggestion , at that point centered about my former Smith char Kane, was to invoke the elder Journeyman clause that was at the one or other time within the policies of the craft."

Allory to be honest, is primarily concerned with activity level and enthusiasm. Consistant activity level being very high on my priority list for admin. to Chandor, "I agree.. and that brings me to my next point, all of the guidelines and documentation currently online."

Allory considers, "Insta-journeymen for older chars with no advancement?"

Chandor says "So have *temporary* characters, that should be played mostly within rigid limits until the normal process of promotions gives us the staff we need."

Chandor nods to Allory, "Right."

Allory nods, "I'll definately consider that Chandor, it's got a lot of merit. We ready to move on to onling docs?"

Chandor nods.

Oshay says "I don't see any problems with promoting people already here. We all know why it would be being done, and it wouldn't be hard to ic explain most of it. Extra characters mean extra work, and if they are to go poof it's almost a waste. But, I'll go with whatever Allory decides."

Allory okays, "To be blunt, the lhelp around here is pretty vile, it needs some major work to improve content and clarity and organization."

Loren listens to the lhelp hit counter spin!

Chandor grins "It probably spins low frequency."

Allory is also planning on reviving the practice of sending out an email package to each new smith with some helpful information and things they may want to know, such as advancement and subcrafts and the like. I still have the one that I received as an apprentice, sometime back int he stone age and it was excellent, thanks to Atan. I am looking for suggestions on what you'd have liked to see in the 'frosh book for smiths' and also what things you'd like to see in the +lhelp.

Chandor says "Are the pages at angelfire still actively maintained ?"

Oshay nods at Allory...."Sounds good."

Loren nods, "Sounds good! How about copying some of the pages from the 'news smiths' into +lhelp and revamping as needed?"

Loren nods, "and copying some of the pages from the '+info smiths'?"

Allory nods to Loren, "Although news smiths needs a revamp as well, I believe it still lists Tobas as CM."

Oshay says "Sounds like we need a total update, then."

Loren looks at Allory, "Will subcrafts be left alone?"

Allory nods to Oshay, "I think we've hit that stage. I'd like any suggestions to be emailed ([email protected]) to me, alright? I'm getting there Loren, be patient."

Oshay makes a note of the addy.

Allory points to her +finger, it's there too. :)

Allory alrights, "Next on my list is subcrafts. We currently have the subcrafts Metalworking, machining, chemistry, material science, archetecture, weaponsmithing and glasscraft. Did I miss any?"

Oshay says "I would be happy to do whatever I can to help. I can code some, but am no expert. BTW...that skiff that the manual gave direction to code up....may I suggest that thet be made *alot* simplier? I never could get through it, and I have heard others say so too. It's *way* above the coding level it should be. And that makes people frustrated and want to give up."

Allory nods emphatically to Oshay, "I hated that shardling thing, I'm aiming with a firelizard or cot as a code example."

Chandor says "As for coding, well I think IC/OOC classes are necessary and efficient to adress these problems."

Oshay smiles with relief..."Great! I hated it too. I know programmers who would probably have had a hard time with it. I know because I asked a few questions about it. It was bloody awful!"

Allory grins, "I'd love to see code classes given. However, I have neither the time nor skill to give them. Anyone feel up for teaching a basic code course?"

Loren shrugs, "I would just take coded object, make them visible and put them in the classroom for examples."

Oshay shakes her head..."Sorry. I'm pretty much at basic level myself, to be honest. But then I have had head injuries and can have trouble with concentration.

Chandor says "I am, been here since Moonchild's server, Head Coder on BattleTech 3056 muse, and getting again familiar with current code here. I think I can help people to understnad the finer isconceptions of the Mush Parser."

G'har watches everybody volunteer at once. ;) I can be available for questions on the knot, and such, but teaching classes might be a little beyond my time capabilities, at this point.

Allory chuckles to Chandor, "How about starting with @create, @desc and varios drop, fail messages first? Sounds wonderful, I'll leave it up to you to decide on a time, post it to the SMI board, everyone reads that.. right?"

Oshay would really prefer that the coding be kept simple, so newcomers won't feel out of their depths and frustrated. If someone *wants* to do some special coding, well and good. But otherwise.....keep it simple, please?

Arlak chuckles and nods.

Chandor nods, "I'll start with the basic's from Amberyl's manual, that's still the best reference around.

Arlak nods and agrees

Loren frowns, "Really? Seem like is was written by Microsoft."

Oshay hasn't read it.

G'har heys, compared to the +help...

Chandor says "Loren be happy that you don't know with what the server does in internally, that could be MS code :-("

Allory holds up her hand, "Time out, time out, no more code griping! Subcrafts! I'd like to talk about them, please."

Loren grins, "I've seen some of it. Looks like any of the crappy old C code I've had to maintain.

Oshay is a farrier, so is im the metalworking subcraft.

Chandor says "Allory, I think the enumeration was complete."

Loren nods, "Checks out with '+info smith subcrafts' and the teaching tapestry at Bitra."

Allory alrights, "With the current canon accepted on the MUSH, most bladed weapons are not permitted. Basically this leaves the weaponsmiths doing belt knives til they drool, which I do not feel is a good use of their creativity. I am proposing phasing weaponsmithing to an NPC craft. What this means is that current weaponsmiths would not be affect, but people joining the craft would not be given the option of weaponsmithing. I realize that this is going to take some mulling over, but I feel that de-emphasizing the weaponry would do a lot to help the MUSH keep canon. Now before I get inundated with comments about how weaponsmiths do all sorts of other things than sit at a forge and create weapons of destruction, I'd like to point out that anything other than an edged weapon can just as easily be created under the metal working subcraft.

Loren looks around, "No flamethowers, guys! She's right!"

Chandor says "Complete agreement from me."

Oshay blinkies..."I thought that there were a few swords on Pern?"

Chandor says "few is the keyword here"

Allory nods to Oshay, "Pern of the books, yes. It's most highly discouraged on the MUSH to try and keep the bloodshed to nil."

Oshay nods..."They would be very expensive, so mostly LH's and such would have them. Have the wizzes said otherwise?

Chandor says "I think we just move weapon-smithing from being a full-grown subcraft into a speciality of Metal working"

Oshay says "I thought you couldn't kill another persons character without their permission? That would make it almost impossible. And if someone *did* want to get killed, a beltknife would do the jog just fine. Or a bow, or a rock. It isn't weapons that kill people, it's people."

Chandor says "Right, but the point Allory made is the further de-emphasizing of weaponry in general."

Loren says "You can't have weapons that would easily kill dragons!"

Annik thinks putting weaponsmithing under metalwork is a good idea.

Oshay says "I don't see why. De-emphasing weapons to that point would be against canon from what I can see AM had them, Pern had them. And I don't think a sword *could* be used to kill a dragon. Something that big, that can fly away and breath fir?!"

Arlak agrees

Arlak says "Oshay, Lots of the things and rules on this MUSH conflict with the books, nothing we can do about that."

Oshay does not see Pernese weapons as being any problem. Thinks that sometimes people....no offense intended...are too sensative about weapons. But will go with whatever Allory decides.

Chandor says "Oshay, to the canon point, I don't think that swords are that common, The Fort Weyrleader T'ron used a knife , and that is one kind of a character that could have had a sword if he wanted to and the kind of personality that would."

Loren nods, "Fax didn't seem to have one either."

Allory nods in agreement with Arlak, "Exactly. One of those happens to be swords, and to be honest, the fact that I've seen most of my apprentices of late declare that they want to be weaponsmiths and to /know/ that under the guidelines of the MUSH they cant work on anything other than beltknives is driving me nuts. No MUSH can be exactly like Anne's books, that's just fact."

Oshay says "AM put a few in, so as far as I can see they are canon...as *reareities*. But, the wizes have done things that I consider non-canon before. And you can't argue with them, they do as they like."

Chandor says "And to further that point, a sword is a very specialized tool with only one application, which is one thing most smithcrafters would consider inefficient."

Loren smiles, "If smiths say no swords then PernMUSH will have to follow!"

Allory nods, "MUSHes are never democracies. Anyhow, does the plan to do something to weaponsmithing sound alright to everyone?"

Oshay shrugs..."Holds have guards for a reason. Remember Fax? All is not peace and light constantly on Pern. Sometimes, weapons are needed. And humans always make them.

Chandor says "We would not says no swords :-), just at least six months to delivery and about 500 marks in cost should be enough to drive the point home if needed."

Oshay looks at Loren..."No. It's up to the wizes, not us. If they say it is canon, than anyone could just make up a sword and have an ic story about getting it from us.

Jorj has been idled by RL for a while (keepers put feeding time at such awkward MUSHmoments...)

Jorj notes that he has taught coding at the Harper Hall in a past life or three, starting from _very_ basics, and could do it again.

Argothe says "...'+info policy canon2' deals with swords.."

Chandor nods to Allory.

Jorj happens to agree that weaponsmithing on this mush should be a very specialized subpart of the metallworking subcraft.

Annik asks a BIG favor. Can everyone please hold their poses for just a sec while I catch up??

Oshay says "Some weapons are not made of metal. What about bows, etc?"

Chandor says "Oshay, metal is our problem, other weapons the wizzes.""

Allory hasnt had the kind of day to sit and debate the vagrancies of what's canon and what isnt. Can we hold on to that until after the meeting. Thanks Argothe, I knew somoene would find it. If it's not metal, it's not smithcraft and I'm not discussing it right at this moment.

Loren says "No projectile weapons, please. Dragons would be too vulnerable to them.""

Annik asks again... "PLEASE???"

Oshay says "Loren...sorry but this mush already *has* bows."

Chandor says "Loren, Oshay please later."

Oshay notes that she was just pointing out information, so folks would know it, and was not trying to be difficult. Will shut up now.

Allory alrights, "One last point and then you can debate canon, weapons or belly butten fluff all night, alrighty? :) Just as we've been happily recruiting apprentices, if you ever come across anyone who'd like to be staff with us, we're sorely lacking in that department as well."

Chandor has a point before the free for all topics.

Annik sighs as she is caught up...

Chandor nods "Headperson, posted crafters, drudges any kind of resident as in a Hold."

Loren says "Might have to shanghai them."

Chandor says "I think that page was/is maintained by Ethelwyn, if that is no longer maintainable I can offer the webspace for a new Page. (And the time and resources to maintain it.)"

Allory cheers Chandor, "Done. I'll forward you copies of any documentation I cough up."

Allory has none. Drat, I thought of somthing and now I've forgotten it. Hrm.

Annik says "Don't characters get taken off (or whatever the correct term is) after 3 months of idle?"

Allory nods to Annik, "They idle out at that point, unless they've got a vacation flag set."

Loren says "Wiazards give them a little extra time but by six months the @idledest is used."

ArgotheQuestion : "Should we have a policy regarding expected activity?"

Loren looks puzzled, "Daily update, like miss a day and ?"

Annik says "Someone should e-mail Ethelwyn and talk to her about the Smithcraft Webpage."

G'har passes around snugs, and is going to leave y'all to hammer out this stuff while he drums up some RP about the evil thing that Allory did in the IC bit. ;)

Chandor says "Just having a job logging into the Mush capturing +rwho/all and putting it on web."

Jorj suggests that no policy on activity will avail ye.

G'har also suggests asking Margret if she knows what's up with Wyn. Meg and she knew each other... I think.

G'har lets in the noise of the work hall briefly, before the door mercifully shuts behind him.

Allory grins to Argothe, "You can ask and beg and plead, but you cant drag people bodily and force them to log in."

Jorj says "People will be active if and only if they are interested, and there is somethign to do. In my experience, someone like that who is on for 45 minutes at 2am EST is far more valuable than someone who is online and inactive in their cot for five hours a day."

Arlak grins and nods

Oshay would rather see people being active because they want to be, then because they feel forced. A restrictive poloicy won't keep anyone who really want to idle from doing it, either.

Loren says "So we need to look at what we enjoy doing, right?"

Arlak says "Well, there's a difference between being slightly active and completely inactive and useless."

Allory nodnods to Jorj, "Or who is on for an hour every other day, regular like clockwork. 50 hrs online a week means nothing if you are afk for 49,5 hrs of it."

Arlak fell into that category for a LONG time because of the Ruatha->Fort Hold situation

Allory nods to Arlak, "Sometimes online stuff makes it difficult to log in, or RL gets in the way. It happens."

Argothe shrugs, "It was just an idea..:)...point taken"

Jorj says "There is...ok, simply, I'm an area leader somewhere else on this mush. My policy there is that activity is Good. Inactivity solves itself after 3 months. So we ask applicants how long they expect they'll be on each week (so we can plan) and then don't do anything else with the info."

Chandor says "Activity should not be rated by hours online, I could have a robot on several Mu*'s without anynone noticing a difference to a normal player."

Allory nods to Jorj, "Alrighty, any other points to bring up?"

Jorj grins. "I've been told that about my RP from time to time..."

Loren raises his hand.

Jorj wonders if there is a newbie document he might have emailed to him? Something that outlines what's expected of me first few days, where to park my carcass, what the subcrafts are, sort-of-thing?

Oshay says "What about posted Smith's? We stay posted?"

Allory nods to Oshay, "You stay posted, if you want. Tanon gets hauled back, but that's a specific TP and temporary. Jorj, there'll be one just as soon as I write one. :) Aim for Sunday? More likely Monday."

Arlak suggests that we keep people around the hall until we get more numbers of actives on....3 apprentices at once is ok for a while, but you need 5 on at once to really enjoy an area.

Annik says "Have you looked at the Smith Webpage Jorj? It has all that stuff."

Jorj says "That's fine. I'm a slow reader!"

Loren says "I'd like to soften the smith hall a bit."

Annik grins "Do you mean soft like cheese, Loren?"

Oshay nods..."Thanks Allory."

Allory gets a mental picture of spreading the Hall on a bagel.

Arlak says "ummmmmmm, bagels! ;)"
