The 2001 Team

The 2001 Team consisted of six members, all seniors: Kenny Johnson, Cristina Contreras, Maria Juarez, Araceli Dominguez, Fanny Pelayo and Jacob Deocera. They had a busy year. There were a number of activities undertaken by the group.

a.) The team was invited to attend the Annual San Leandro Chamber of Commerce Awards Luncheon. Team members talked about the program and handed out material from the Disabled American Veterans asking for support of that organization.

b.) The first school rally had proven so successful, the team was asked to present a second rally. At the second rally we honored not only our fallen veterans but also all San Lorenzo Unified School District employees who are veterans. Our guest list included representatives from the federal, state and county governments; school board members; the superintendent of schools and other district employees including veterans being honored; members of the military; representatives from various veteran service organizations; alumni; and, of course, staff and students of San Lorenzo High. A reception preceded the rally during which time many of our guests got to meet the team members.

Our guest speaker was Mr. Mark Chandler, Chairman of the Alameda County of Veteran Affairs. Our keynote speaker was Major James Taylor (U.S. Army, Retired). Major Taylor is a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Our master of ceremonies was Mr. Terry Clark, principal of San Lorenzo High. Also present was Mrs. Joanne Norman. Mrs. Norman is the sister of one of our fallen veterans, Steve Srsen.

The program included a slide presentation. Pictures of the veterans were shown. The accomplishments of the veterans (both while at school and in the service) were noted.

c.) We were finally able to dedicate a memorial to our veterans on campus. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Terry Clark, our principal at the time, we were able to acquire the display case without cost. The dedication was attended by school officials from the San Lorenzo Unified School District and the Eden Area ROP; relatives of the honored veterans; alumni of San Lorenzo; and representatives of the military, and federal, state, and local governments. The color guard was furnished by the Junior ROTC Corps of Cadets from Encinal HS in Alameda. Visitors may view the memorial whenever the school is open (usually 8am to 3pm, weekdays). Please stop by the main office for a visitors pass. The memorial is just across the lobby.
