Cheating Heart

“Mary?” Brian asked.
“Yeah? What’s on your mind church boy?” I answered back.
“Uh, listen. I have to cancel our date tonight. You see I have to go to an uh… thing. I’ll explain it to you later. It’s a surprise.”
“Well gee thanks. Now I want to know what the surprise is.” I lightly tapped him on the back of the head.
“Just didn’t want you to get all upset and stuff okay?”
“Don’t be so paranoid. We’ve been going out for like a year. I have nothing to fear from you. You probably like to think you can be dangerous, but you are oh so wrong.
“Hey… what makes you think I am so safe? I’ll have you know that there are millions of chances for me to have any of those fans out there.”
“Are you trying to make me paranoid now?” I teased.
“Hey. I’m just letting you know I’m not as safe as you think I am.”
“Don’t ever talk to me like that again. You are scaring me now.”
“Oh. I didn’t mean to do that. I’m sorry baby.” He gave me a quick hug and was on his way out the door. Seeing as my plans for the evening had come to a sudden close I decided to check on my friend Nick to see what he was doing. Maybe we could check out a movie or something.
“Hey Nick!” I hollered while I was knocking on the door to his room. Just like him to have the television turned up all loud while playing his video games.
“Yeah! Hang on a second. I’ll be right there!” He yelled back. He opened the door in a white wife-beater and a pair of shorts. He was all wet so I assumed he had just hopped out of the shower. “What’s up?”
“Well, Brian just canceled on me so I was wondering if you wanted to go out and do something.”
“Yeah, sure I guess. What do you want to do?”
“I don’t know. I was just thinking we could catch a movie or something. We could just chill too. You know whatever.”
“Sounds good to me. What time do you want to meet to do all this?” You see, it was like three in the afternoon at this time.
“I was thinkin’ around six ‘o clock.”
“Alright. Six it is. See you then.” He grabbed his basketball and went out the door.

*Nick’s View*

“I gotta find Brian.” I thought to myself. He must not have told her yet. That’s just not right at all. Maybe he’s at the basketball courts. Sure enough I was right. There he was. I could almost throttle him. That’s okay. I’ll leave that to Mary. “Brian!” I called out.
“Oh, hey Nick. What’s up man?”
“You didn’t tell Mary about you and Leighanne yet have you?” I accused. He deserved it too. I wasn’t in the least bit sorry for the guy.
“Well… I was going to, but then I looked in those eyes and I just couldn’t do it. I still love her you know.” He confessed.
“I don’t know if I can believe you Bri. If you really loved her you wouldn’t be doing this to her. And don’t give me any crap about how you love Leighanne too.”
“I don’t even see how this is your problem. This is something I have to deal with.”
“I have to deal with it too… don’t you know that? I have to see her everyday too and know that you are keeping something from her that will break her heart.” I was seriously pissed at this point in time and was thinking of several things that I wanted to say, but I knew it would just make things horrible between Brian and me.
“Alright. I don’t like it when you are in the middle like this so I swear I’ll tell her when I get back to the hotel.”
“And then you’re just going to leave her and go on your date with Leighanne? That is just low.”
“Hey. You are the one that didn’t want me to keep this a secret any longer. Live with something.”
“Alright man. How about we play some basketball and take our minds off of this bad serious stuff.” I just didn’t want to think about it for at least thirty minutes. I just wanted Brian to be my best friend and not someone that I knew was hurting my other best friend. So we played some one-on-one. I must say, he was quite distracted.
