| Homan, 08, wants Republican link removed
Recently, I was on the school website. If you have not gone there lately, there is a new addition to the student area of the website. This addition would be the Yyoung Republicans website, hosted by geocities. com. I feel that this is an inappropriate action, because it may come off to some that our school is Republican. Many, I know, are indeed Republicans. As we saw last year, by far our student body is in support of Mr. Bush. That does not mean the majority should have all the say. If the majority controlled everything, our system of checks and balances would be reduced to nothing. He having the Republicans website on SLUHs page, I think, is unfair to others with opposing political beliefs. I do, however, recognize that the Republicans are a school-supported club, as are the Democratic Socialists. I would not be as angered if our school website had a Clubs area on our site. Inside of that area, clubs would be able to post their information, especially about upcoming club events and meeting. But as for the time being, I think the Republicans website needs to be removed from SLUHs website. Ken Homan 08 |

| Response to Homan To the editor: In last weeks edition, Ken Homan, 08, expressed concern that SLUHs Young Republicans Club was represented on the schools website. It is our policy that any officially-recognized and moderated student club may have a club website, and that clubs website may be listed on the students page of the the schools site. It is the duty of the club moderator to approve the content prior to posting. We also periodically review the content of student-created sites to be sure they are in keeping with the mission of our school. As long as a club is officially recognized and has an active moderator on our faculty, they may be listed on the schools website. Joe Patke To the editors: Last week a letter appeared in the Prep News calling for the SLUH Young Republican site link to be removed from the SLUH website. After reading the arguments against why the site should be removed, the club thought it was important to inform the student body about what the site is for and how it was obtained. The site was formed because the club recognized that it was a way to outreach to our members. Our site doesnt directly state anything about Republicans and the partys values, but instead offers important information such as when the club convenes and event dates. On the site there are links that can lead you to the GOP and other Republican resources, but this is certainly only for those who would like to learn a little more about the GOP. So therefore our site isnt a propaganda machine, but merely a resource of communication. So how did we obtain a site? Through the work of the club we received permission from the third floor administration to create and use the current site for the reasons cited above. Last weeks letter called for an area for club activates on the site. If proper investigation was done, it would have been discovered that the whole SLUH website is under going a major change, and in late January or so there will be a page for all clubs to have websites. Right now, though, we have received permission to use our current address until the SLUH webpage is complete. Finally, some believe that its unfair to let us have site and not the Young Democratic Socialists. It is not our responsibility to choose if the YDS would like a website or not. What our club administration has decided on, though, is to extend an invitation to the Young Democratic Socialists to come view how our site is set up, collaborate with our webmasters, and work with them to help set up a site of their own. We hope this letter has cleared all confusion about the site. Thanks and God Bless, YR President William Hartzler, 08 YR Vice President Brett DeLaria, 08 |
