Sophomore Theology Course Goals
SOPHOMORE LEVEL THEOLOGY CLASS
Goals and Objectives
1. Goal: Students will have a general knowledge of the New Testament.
- Students will have read major portions of the Gospel of Matthew,
including Infancy Narrative, Miracle stories, Parables, and Passion &
Death Narrative.
- Students will have a working knowledge of the N. T. as outlined in the
text Journey Throught the New Testament, by Teresa LeCompte.
- Students will have an understanding of the type of death Jesus suffered
through handouts and video presentation.
- Students will have a working knowledge of Catholic theological vocabulary from handouts and will be able to tell how those words
relate to the New Testament themes and topics.

II. Students will have an understanding and experience of the seven ritual sacraments of the Church.
- Students will have a working knowledge of the history, celebration, and
doctrine pertaining to each of the 7 ritual Sacraments of the Catholic
Church as outlined in the text, The Sacraments: Rites of Conversion,
by William J. O�Malley, S.J.
- Students will have attended, participated in the rituals celebrating the
sacraments of Baptism, (approved) Tridentine Rite Eucharist, Anointing
of the Sick and Dying, and Matrimony.
- Students will know about the development of an informed conscience
and the characteristics of sinfulness.

III. Students will have a general knowledge of Adolescent Development and the Development of Moral Relationships with self, other people and God.
- Students will have a working knowledge of adolescent development as outlined in the textbook, Sexuality, by Carol A. Pijacki & Thaddeus V. Pijacki.
- Students will have a working knowledge of vocabulary dealing with
human sexual reproduction as listed on handout.
- Students will have a working knowledge of the Church�s teaching on the
practice of chastity for people in their age group. Handouts with terms
from the Catechism of the Catholic Church will be discussed and
quizzed on. The topics will include: masturbation, homosexuality,
fornication, pornography, and rape.
- Students will be able to describe how to form a healthy conscience and
how Church authority supports such formation.
- Students will be able to describe the difference between objective and
subjective sinfulness.
- Students will be able to discuss the following:

- Two primary principles of Marriage and the mutual support of
spouses;
- attributes of covenant relationship;
- inherent goodness of human beings from God�s image and
likeness.
