Plato's Allegory of the Cave
Tuesday, June 24
Today’s task. You will be graded on a ten point scale for what you turn in, but you can work together to help each other learn. So you work a s a group but hand in your own assignment. You have one hour.
- You will be divided into two groups by height.
- You will work in two different classrooms and can use the dry erase board.
- Read and mark Plato’s “allegory of the cave.’
- As a group, diagram it on the board as best you can. This has to have three parts, like a cartoon:
- diagram the cave and all important parts of it.
- show what happens when a person leaves the cave and breaks into the light.
- show what would happen if that person returned to the cave and tried to tell others of his discovery.
- After your have a good and accurate diagram, reproduce your diagram of Plato’s “allegory of the cave” below. you can duplicate your groupps or compose your own. yo must decide.
- Then list three key ideas about what this allegory is saying about you and your world here and now. State each idea clearly and completely as you can. (I should have instructed students to write at least a paragraph on each).
A suggestion: 1-4 should take you about a half hour, and 5-6 should take you about a half an hour.
