Week One/Prelection
Monday, June 15

- Are you a Christian? Are you a Catholic? What do these really mean?
HMW: Make sure you have a three ring binder, the text with some looseleaf, a Bible, and writing utensils. Read and know the major ideas of text's Introduction.
Tuesday, June 16
- Openning prayer/meditation from handout "Hearts Large Enough to Hold the World: Words for the Journey" Prayer Ignatius "Suscipe"
- Review of yesterday: short quiz
- Review of some key ideas from Freshman Theology that pertains to Jesus & Scripture
HMW: Read and study Introduction/Chapter One. Test on Thursday. I've recommended you use the five step method for really getting an assigned reading. You are assigned to be able to show a process of active reading, i.e. some real and concrete evidence of work done, e.g. book marked, set of notes. Minimally try this 5 step method.
Wednesday, June 17
HMW: Finish reading and studying Chapter One. Test tomorrow.
Thursday, June 18
- Prayer: Thomas Merton's My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going
- Chapter One test
- Gospel reading: The story of the rich, young man, Mt, 19, 16-26. John Paul II reflection in Veritatis Splendor 6-21
- Small group challenge:
- Give reasons why it would be good for anyone, even an atheist or a Buddhist, to read , know and study the Old Testament.
- Give reasons why it would be important for any Christian (Lutherans, Baptists as well as Catholics) to read , to know and to study the Old Testament.
- Give reasons why it would be important for a Catholic to read , know and study the Old Testament.
- Is the God of the Old Testament the same God as the God of Jesus?
HMW: Read/Mark/Study Chapter Two.
Friday, June 19
- Return tests and discuss key questions.
- metanoia experiences. The conversion of Igatius, Two Standards.
- Three level interpretation; Parable of the Sower and the Seed.
HMW: Correct tests and learn from your mistakes. Finish reading and studying Chapter Two. Test on Monday. Begin to work on your first assignment: Bible Illuminated OR three level interpretation.
Week Two/The Gospel of Matthew
Monday, June 22
HMW: R/M/S Chapter Three. Test on Wednesday. This week we will read the Gospel of Matthew all the way through.
Tuesday, June 23
- Return Chapter Two and corrrect them. Q & A. Learn from your mistakes.
- Discuss Chapeter Three: Gospel of Matthew; answer any questions about the chapter.
- Ask class "What is the best way to really come to know and understand Jesus?
- Begin Gospel chart.
HMW: Finish R/M/S chapter three. Use chapter 3 review to guide your study. Study for test tomorrow.
Wednesday, June 24
- Gospel Reading: Judgment of Nations, Mt. 25, 31-46
- Chapter Three test.
- Begin to read the Gospel of Matthew. Take one page (one side) of notes.
- Suggested schedule:
- Wednesday in class: read Matthew 1,1 to 4,17 the birth of Jesus and the beginning of His ministry and 4,18 to 9,38 The Sermon on the Mount and miracles in Galilee
- Wednesday for homework: 10, 1 to 12, 50 teaching on the mission and rejection
13,1 to 17,27 parables on the kingdom of Heaven, the disciples' acknowledging Jesus as the Messiah
- Thursday in class: 18,1 to 20, 34 teaching about community and forgiveness
and 21,1 to 25,46 teaching about the coming destruction, conflicts with Jewish leaders in Jerusalem
- Thursday for homework: finish Gospel: 26,1 to 28,20 Jesus' death and resurrection.
HMW: continue to read and take some notes on the Gospel of Matthew.
Thursday, June 25
- Ruby Bridges
- Read and discuss Sermon on the Mount. Handout: Biblical commentary fromColelgeville series and outline. Click here to listen to an audiofile of the Sermon.
- Continue to read the Gospel of Matthew.
- Computer/teacher time.
HMW: Finish reading and taking some notes on the Gospel of Matthew; one page of notes due tomorrow.
Friday, June 26 Bridget Rush (Mr. Garavaglia's wife) will take this class. Probable schedule:
- Hand in one page Gospel of Matthew notes.
- Introduction by Ms. Rush.
- Watch Jesus Christ Superstar. Take notes on worksheet provided.
- Reaction/discussion. Hand in your JCS worksheet att end of class.
HMW: First homework assignment due by Monday: Bible Illuminated OR three level interpretation. . Get all caught up with you r study, your corrections and work. Consider extra credit.
Week Three/ The Gospels of Mark and Luke
Monday, June 29
- Chapter Four: Called to Believe/The Gospel of Mark
- Give students a chance to respond to, ask questions and discuss the Friday's tragedy. See if Scripture, prayer, Church have any thing for us.
- Decide what to do this week, in light of the demands of class and the funerals.
- Begin to read and discuss chapter four, the Gospel of Mark, pages 93-99.
HMW: R/M/S Chapter Four, at least pages 100-111. Begin to work on your Witness to Faith homework, due on Monday.
Tuesday, June 30 Class 8 till 9:30, then we will go down to the funeral mass for Jake Ritz
- Reactons, questions about wake, funerals, etc.
- Questions for tomorrow's test: Ruby Bridges, Gospel of Matthew, Sermon on the Mount, Chapter Four.
- Discuss some major ideas of chapter four: Paschal Mystery, Son of Man, Suffering Servant
HMW: Finish R/M/S chapter four. Use chapter 4 review to guide your study. Study for test tomorrow. Test includes questions about the Gospel of Matthew and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Wednesday, July 1

- Invite reactions, questions, from Jake's funeral yesterday. Look at the readings from the mass.
- Begin to Chapter Five: Called to Justice/The Gospel of Luke
Discuss extra credit opportunities.
Begin chapter five and/or check out Witness of Faith choice.
HMW: Continue to R/M/S chapter five. Test on Monday. Witness to Faith assignment due on Monday.
Thursday, July 2 Class cancelled; funeral mass for Brendan Langford and his father at Ascension Church in Chesterfield. Students will R/M/S Chapter five on their own. Witness to Faith assignment due on Monday.
HMW: Finish R/M/S chapter five. Use chapter 5 review to guide your study. Study for test on Monday. Finish Witness to Faith and hand it assignment on Monday.

- Watch video The Last 18 Hours of Jesus.
HMW: Begin to R/M/S Chapter Six: Called to Love/The Gospel of John. Use chapter 6 review to guide your study.

- Test chapter 7.
- Finish Portrait of a Radical video; seek student response. Talk about what comes after Jesus' crucifixion, which leads into the last two chapters of the text.
- Witness of Faith: Andrew Woodcock Lacey Mosley. and Alfred Delp, S.J.
- Skim over the first half of Acts and talk about the change in the Apostles, Peter at the Temple steps, the matrydom of Stephen and the Council of jerusalem.
HMW: Begin to R/M/S Chapter Eight. Use chapter 8 review to guide your study.
Week Five: The Epistles & The Final Exam

HMW: Prepare for exam. This review can be a very important of learning and retaining important ideas and skills learned in class. All extra credit due by tomorrow.
