First Quarter
Introduction to the world of the freshmen.
Key themes: adolescence as a time of transition. problems of human existence, society's answers, the role of religion and faith in living a good life, Ignatius as model of these themes and The American Civil Rights Movements as example of key ideas. We also emphasized organization and study skills.
Second Quarter
Introduction to the key beliefs and practices of Catholic Christianity.
Major ideas and themes follow Thomas Zanzig's Understanding Catholic Christianity: Jesus, the Church, Scripture, Tradition, Sacraments, the Liturgical Year, Spirituality and Prayer and Christian Morality.
Third & Fourth Quarter
Introduction to Hebrew Scriptures, the beginnings of salvation history.
We will begin the third quarter with Zanzig chapter 3 "Judaism: Discovering Our Religious Roots." The second semester will center on the study of Hebrew Scriptures, using the Bible as our primary text and Link1s Path Through Scriptures as a guide. We will also listen to the ideas of Rabbi Harold Kushner (When Bad Things Happen to Good People and To Life! A Celebration of Jewish Being and Thinking). Some classes on the American Civil Rights Movement will be taken as example of social injustice and prophetic action in today's world.
