This can be done in addition to any other fourth quarter extra credit. Choose one for +5 points. Must be in by May 10.
Symbols are a major part of religion and faith. We need reminders of important truths in our lives or we will be overwhelmed by the omnipresent reminders of societal values, i.e. advertisements!
1. Make a key ring. Go to a Hallmark Store, Johnny Brock's or some kind of store where they let you make your own key ring. I will have two examples when in class: one I made for my daughter with "WWJD" and one for my son with "AMDG" on it. If I did one for myself, I think I'd have ALWAYS on it. Choose an important word that will remind you of Jesus and help you live out your Christian beliefs.
2. Paint a rock. Get a good, special, unique rock and paint it. Put key word(s) on it. Make it colorful. Use it as a paperweight.
3. Ever paint a T-shirt? If you are interested, see me. We could have a T-shirt painting party! Notice the T-shirts on my walls of my classroom--and the message each conveys!
Art is also an important way truth is conveyed. Movies, literature, music all can be important ways to preserve and maintain important ideas and values.
3. Rent and watch the movie "Simon Burch." Then answer these questions:
Why was Simon an "unlikely hero?" More so, how did the very characteristics which made him unlikely enable him to be te hero when it really counted?
Did Simon demonstrate the four characteristics of biblical faith? Explain.
Give one other important idea or image that struck you in this movie. Explain why it's important to you.
4. You could do a similar assignment with a movie you think brings out major biblical themes. This must be movie set in modern times that illustrates major biblical themes. You choose three important questions and answer them in well written essays. If you do this you need to get the movie approved by me before you do it!
5. Do an essay on literature. You might even tie this into your present English class. Your teacher might accept it as extra credit. You can do an essay like "A Comparison of the Image of Man in Lord of the Flies and Hebrew Scriptures." See me if you have other ideas.
