Journal 1

(9 sections worth +10 each, rubric grading)

An intellectual journal done as a web page. This will be a major way you can prepare for the tests. It will also be an easy +10 if you do the assignment and get it in on time. There will be five sections on this:

A) What is the one key idea of this chapter. Pay attention to the title of the chapter!

B) Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.

C) One image that captures the chapter for you.

D) One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal. Just write out the question. Try to answer it if you want.

E) The fifth part will vary.

  • Chapter 1 What experiences in your freshman year brought you closer to Jesus? Explain.
  • Chapter 2 Do one of the "Living the Gospel" question at the end of the chapter, page 40. Write out the question and then answer it well.
  • Chapter 3 Pick one organization working for social justice today. Describe the organization and what it does. Make sure to provide a link to its web site.
  • Chapter 4 Do a three level interpretation on the "Parable of the Sower," Mark 4:3-9.
  • Chapter 5
  • Chapter 6 Do the "Living the Gospel" question at the end of the chapter, pae 118. Write out the question and then answer it well.
  • Chapter 7
  • Chapter 8 What is your favorite parable or miracle story? Cite the passage (book, chapter and verse) and explain why you chose this.
  • Chapter 9 What is your most favorite passage from an epistle? Copy the passage and tell why it is important to you.

Journals are due on the day we have our chapter test. These will help you learn the key ideas of the chapter.

In Chapter one the key word used key theme throughout this chapter is relationships. This chapter shows the relationships through several different parts of the New Testament. We see how the relationship between the apostles and others was strengthened on Pentecost thanks to the power of the Holy spirit.

The first key idea that I would like to remember would be: Looking at the Gospels is a similar experience, for the Gospels offer different reflections on one story. Although all of the Gospels are different, they still have the same primary message, the good news. The Gospels are not biographies of the lives of the people that they tell of, but rather they are meant to as faith testimonies that were communicated in a particular time, language, and culture. All of the stories in the Gospels still tell of God's love for us , and his want and desire to be with us.

I want to remeber this because I belive that it can be confusing when you look at the Gospels, and all of them are different, so this shows that I can have a different interpretation of the Gospels than someone esle. I think that if all of the Gospels were the same, then, one, they would be boring becasue it is just the same thing over and over again, and, two, you get the same idea from different aspects, different people, and different places. I think with this logic in mind, I can be more accpting of different aspects that show up from time to time.

I also found out that I do not know as much as I thought that I did about the Bible as a whole. I knew that I did not know the Bible well to begin with, but I did think that I had a pretty good foundation. However, when Mr. Scuito gave us that test with several of the questions that were designed for 6 year olds, I was dumbfounded. I could not even begin to fathom how a 6 year old would even know 25% of the questions given.

This was important to me because being a Catholic, Scripture and Tradition are the key elements that are the foundation of our faith as a whole, and they are essential for us to come to know Jesus better. It is also an area that I am not so strong in, but if I concentrate harder, then I can become richer and deeper in my faith. I also want to learn more about the Bible because it is a frequert category on Jeopardy, and I love Jeopardy.

One question that I have from this chapter is: How does one know when one must go through a metanoia?

While I do not know the answer to this qustion, I can try to answer it with an idea that I have. I think that one never knows when one should go through a metanoia, it just happens no matter what, and there is nothing that can stop it from happening, but it is something that maybe God helps directs and declares when someone really needs to have little self-examinations. In a way, we here at SLUH, have little metanoias during the school year during the Examen because we reflect on what we have done, and how we can better ourselves.

There were several experiences that have brought me closer to Jesus during my Freshman year at SLUH. The most noticeable one was something that was very different than I could have ever imagined, but somehow it brought me closer to Jesus.

My Dad had said that he was going to go to mass with me one morning before school. I was not exactly thrilled with the idea, but I accepted it and moved on. We met in the Chapel, and I noticed that Mr. Curdt, my English teacher was sitting near the back of the Chapel. I quickly dismissed the thought of him, because, in class, he seemed like the kind of person that went to mass, but really did not "get into the mass"(like a good majority of Catholics, including myself). However, after mass, Mr. Curdt really surprised me; he knelt down and really prayed. Now, these words may sound like I am not giving Mr. Curdt very much credit, but I have never seen anyone truly pray like this before. It almost looked like he was starting to sweat from the intensity of his prayer. It really changed my complete view of him for the whole year, granted, he was still the ritualistic, freshman teasing, Odyssey worshipping, English that I knew and loved, but I saw him as just a highly relgious individual. I kept this memory, and now I see him in a new light whenever I take a glimpse at him. I have heard stories of how St. Joan of Arc prayed when she was being called to serve, and I think that I see her prayer style reflected through Mr. Curdt.

Another experience that really brought me closer to Jesus was the Freshman retreat. Before the retreat, I was not very thrilled about, I mean that I am not one for all of the "How does that make you feel?" that normally entails with a retreat. However, as the retreat continued to go on, I realized that this was not nearly as bad as I thought that it was going to be. However, the big thing that won me over was the mass. It was so simple yet absolutely spiritual, that I think that the retreat mass was the first mass that I have EVER enjoyed. The testemonies that were given were full of compassion and love for others, that I had almost cried at several moments throughout the mass. Especially when Eric Lewis went up to give a salute to Bill Gabbler and Chris Zandstra, both of those people really deserved it. When the retreat was over, I had a wierd feeling that I could not shake; something that just kept biting at me the rest of the day and into the week. I later found out that the biting was Jesus, reminding me to be more thankful for everything that I had.
