In Jesus Christ SuperStar, the Jesus portrayed as one with both High and Low Christology. High Christology means that the Jeus is portrayed as being more God-like, and low christology means that Jesus is being portrayed more man-like. Certain gospels show Jesus in high and low christology, too. For instance, the synoptics, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, all portray Jesus as more human-like, but John portrays Jesus as more God-like.

Jesus is portrayed with High Christology at the very beginning of the movie. When everyone is encircled around him, and he is at the very center. The scenes is almost like they are greatly idolizing Him, and worshiping his divinity. The people even look like they are lifting him up higher. Then, the sun gives him a very divine look.

However, on a low Christological point of view, in the song sung by Mary Magdelene Dont't know how to love Him, Mary says, "He's a man. He's just a man." This clearly shows how May thinks Jesus is. Others surely believe this like the Pharisees.

There are still parts of the movie that can be seen as both high and low christology. One of the most prominent scenes is where Jesus gets encircled by the sick and poor people. All of these people believe that Jesus has these divine powers, and they sing out and call him to heal their ailments. They scream out, "I believe you can make me well... Will you touch me and heal me Christ?" These people truly believe that Jesus is the Christ, and that he is the one who can heal them; thus, revealing that is is very God-like. However, later in the scene, as all of the sick and poor come in closer to Jesus, he becomes overwhelmed, thus, showing the more human-like side of him. He even says, "There's too many of you...Don't push me...There's too little of me...Dont't crowd me...Heal yourselves!" Probably something that we would do if we were caught in that situation.

Another part of the movie that depicts Jesus as in both a high and low christology is during the song Judas's Death. Judas says in the song, "My God! I saw him. He looked three-quarters dead! And he was so bad that I had to turn my head!" Judas finally admits to himself that Jesus is the Christ, a topic that he was struggling with himself about throughout the entire movie. Yet, when Judas goes to give the money back to Caiaphas, he says to him, "He's a man. He's just a man." These lines are the exact same ones that Mary Magdelene had said. They show that Judas still cannot admit that Jesus is God.

In conclusion, Jesus is depicted as being both man and God in the movie Jeus Christ Superstar, and there is valid evidence of both throughout the movie, and the movie is a great modern day interpretation.

Some of the key themes of Jesus that make up the movie Jesus Christ Superstar are ...
  1. Jesus tells us to look at the good things that we have, and to thankful that we have them. During the song Everything's Alright, Jesus says, "Look at the good things you got... You'll be lost, and you'll be sorry when I'm gone." Jesus tries to teach Judas a lesson of how important he is just for holding the apostles together, even with his mere pressence.
  2. Another key theme is that the Kingdom of Heaven is open to everyone, and not only rich or imprtant people can get in. Jesus tells the people this in the song Hosana. Jesus says to the crowd, "For you are bless-ed. There is not one of you who cannot win the kingdom. The slow, the suffering, the quick, the dead."
  3. The final theme of the movie would be that everything in that happens in the world is made possible through God. This teaching is talked about in the song Trial Before Pilate. Jeus says to Pilate, "You have nothing in your hands. Any power you have comes from far beyond. Everything is fixed, and can't change it."
