Seen below the Packwood Glacier is an impressive wall.  You can see the line above the glacier as it angles upward. That is the Pacific Crest Trail a mere two feet at its widest as it makes the one mile traverse to wider ground on the other side. There is a sign at the top of Packwood Saddle warning hikers must yield to Mountain Goats when on this crossing. It also request that you walk your horse across the traverse. The photos of the sign did not come out it was too faded.
When reaching the Packwood ranger station I asked just who does the park service need to tell not to ride their horse across that two foot wide ledge with a three thousand foot drop? I was told every so often the service has to recover a horse and rider at the base of the glacier.
