The thick roof of my home will protect us from the thunderstorm outside. The vigas (the larger beams) are made from ponderosa pines carried all the way from the White Mountains to the south. Aspens from those mountains were also brought to make the smaller beams laid on top called savinos.
The red mud of the surrounding Painted Desert is smoothed over the beams to protect the home further and give a warm brown hue to the walls.
I also use the lighter colored clay in the layers of the Bidahochi Formation to make my pots. Although I prefer to make them outside in the plaza, tonight is not a night for that!
Actually, it looks like the storm is over...let's go back outside....
