The Andes
The central Andes are higher and drier than the region to the south, also becoming wider.  The abrupt slopes are nearly denuded of vegetation and lakes become more rare northward.  The highest mountain in South America is in this region, found in Argentina.  Continuing towards Peru and Bolivia, the Altiplano defines itself between the Cordilleras Occidental and Oriental.
