FAMILY DICROGLOSSIDAE

This family was separated out from the Ranidae after molecular systematics showed it to be a separate group. The genus Limnonectes was previously within Rana but was split out.


Fejervarya cancrivora
(formerly Limnonectes cancrivora
& formerly Rana cancrivora)

English: Crab-eating Frog or Mangrove Frog
Description: Palm-sized ranid. Rear foot webbing almost complete but front is unwebbed. No digit pads. Black spots on back leg which are more pronounced than in a Field Frog. Snout angular (subtends about 60 degrees). Warty skin.
Call: Rapid 'tag-a-taga-tag' like a machinegun rattle.
Diagnostic:
Status: Common comensual of humans.

Before the American Bullfrog was farmed here. the Malayan Giant was collected for food.

English: Malesian Frog
The Malesian was not recognised as a separate species from the Masked Swamp Frog until 1984.

English: Masked Swamp Frog


Limnonectes plicatellus
(formerly Rana plicatella)
English: Rhinoceros Frog
Description: Broad head with a short body. The male frog has a stub on the forehead just behind the eyes.
Habitat: Forest species.

Phrynoglossus laevis
(formerly Occidozyga laevis)
English: Yellow-bellied Puddle Frog
Diagnostic: Very small frog sitting in puddles on the forest floor.
Habitat: Commonly found sitting in puddles on the forest floor along tracks (I suppose you can find them in puddles not on tracks too).
